Sky Atlantic’s ‘Britannia’ Wishes You A Happy (And A Little Creepy) Winter Solstice In New Trailer

by Dave Elliott

As we head into the winter break, Sky Atlantic has released a new “red band” (i.e. not for younglings) trailer for brand new drama Britannia which will arrive in January 2018. They are wishing you a Happy Winter Solstice. Aww… Now cue the severed heads and swearing!

Set in 43AD, when Britain was a country ruled by powerful Druids and warrior queens, Britannia follows the reluctant rise to power of Kerra (Kelly Reilly) the daughter of the King of the Cantii (Ian McDiarmid), and her arch-rival Queen Antedia (Zoe Wanamaker), who are forced to put their differences aside when the Romans invade Britannia.

Meanwhile, rogue Druid Divis (Nikolaj Lie Kaas), the only one who foresaw the Roman invasion, finds an unlikely ally in 12-year-old Cantii girl Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox) in his quest to defeat Rome. The Romans are led by General Aulus Plautius (David Morrissey), who is determined to succeed where Julius Caesar failed and conquer this mythical land at the far edge of the Roman Empire.

Additional cast includes a practically unrecognisable Mackenzie Crook (‘Pirates of the Caribbean’), Annabel Scholey (‘Being Human’), Stanley Weber (‘Outlander’), Julian Rhind-Tutt (‘Rush’) and Hugo Speer (‘The Musketeers’, ‘The Full Monty’.)

As you all probably know by now, ‘Game Of Thrones’ is likely not going to be back on our screens until 2019, so this, along with the return of ‘Westworld’ later in the year, should help to fill the dragon-shaped hole in your viewing.

All episodes of ‘Britannia‘ Season 1 will be available in UHD from Thursday, 18 January 2018 exclusively on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW TV.
