Joss Whedon Returns To TV With Sci-fi Drama ‘The Nevers’ On HBO
Here’s some good news on which to end the week… Joss Whedon is not only returning to television, but he’s doing it on HBO!
The US premium broadcast has landed ‘The Nevers‘ a new sci-fi drama which will be written, directed, and produced by Whedon, who will also serve as showrunner. The show is described as an epic sci-fi drama which follows a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.
“We have long been fans of the incredibly talented and prolific Joss Whedon and we can’t think of a better project than THE NEVERS with which to welcome him to the HBO family,” commented HBO President Of Programming, Casey Bloys. “We look forward to meeting the strange, multifaceted characters of THE NEVERS, to learn their stories, see them in action and share them with our viewers. We’re honored that Joss chose HBO as the place to build his ambitious new world and we are excited to get started.”
Whedon is, of course, the man behind ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, ‘Angel’, ‘Dollhouse’, and our beloved ‘Firefly’. This marks the first time Joss has been fully back in the driving seat of a show since ‘Dollhouse’ ended back in 2010. He then went on to helm the first to ‘Avengers’ movies and served as an exec producer on ‘Agents of SHIELD’ for brother, Jed Whedon, and sister-in-law, Maurissa Tancharoen.
“I honestly couldn’t be more excited,” adds Joss. “THE NEVERS is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic long-form, but their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive. It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world, and the HBO team offer not just scope and experience, not just ‘prestige,’ but a passionate collaboration. I could go on, but – I’m impatiently grateful to say – I have work to do.”
HBO hasn’t given a release date for ‘The Nevers‘, but we would presume it’s not going to arrive before 2019. When it does, it should automatically air on Sky Atlantic due to their deal with HBO. We’ll let you know when we hear more!
