It looks like ‘Scandal’ star Kerry Washington will be adding a sci-fi drama to her ever-growing list of projects, as she is set to star and produce ‘Old City Blues’ for Hulu.
According to reports in THR, the show will be based on the 2011 Giannis Milonogiannis graphic novel, which is set in the year 2048 in Southeastern Europe. Built on the ruins of the country once known as Greece, New Athens is a city crawling with various low-life. Mech smugglers, drug dealers, corrupt politicians and all-too-powerful corporations have the city at the mercy of high-tech criminals.
Solano, Thermidor, and the rest of the New Athens Special Police are charged with keeping the city in order. However, that job becomes much harder when Hayashi, the cybernetically augmented founder of a tech corporation, is found murdered and unravels a mystery which leads them straight into the Old City wastelands.
Washington will produce and star in the series, although her exact role at this point is unclear. Chris Black (‘Outcast’, ‘Mad Men’) will serve as showrunner and exec produce, with Gore Verbinski (‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies, ‘Rango’) set to direct the pilot, assuming the show makes it that far.
This would mark the second Hulu project for Kerry Washington, who is also developing an adaptation of the bestselling novel ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ with Reese Witherspoon at the US streaming service, which landed a straight-to-series order. Washington has just ended a 7 Season run as Olivia Pope on hit Shondaland series ‘Scandal’.
‘Old City Blues’ is currently at the development stage at Hulu, but we’ll let you know if it moves forward.
