Sci-fi drama ‘Counterpart‘ has finally found a UK home as Amazon Prime announces the J. K. Simmons fronted show will come to the STARZPlay channel in September.
Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson in ‘Spider-man’, and Commissioner Gordon for the DCU), plays Howard Silk, a low-level bureaucrat at a seemingly innocuous UN agency. He’s trudging through his latter years of a life filled with regret, that is until he discovers the agency is hiding a secret… It’s protecting a gateway to a parallel universe.
The series also stars Olivia Williams (‘Manhattan’, ‘Dollhouse’) and Harry Lloyd (‘Doctor Who’, ‘Manhattan’, and ‘Game of Thrones’ Viserys Targaryen). Williams plays the wife of Howard, Emily Burton Silk, a key role and a woman with many secrets that drive the plot of the first season. Lloyd stars as Peter Quayle, a director at the agency whose world starts to unravel as a life of espionage takes its toll.
The series was created by ‘The Jungle Book’ screenwriter, Justin Marks, who is also penning the script for the much anticipated ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ movie, due in 2019. Other writers on the show include Amy Berg (‘Da Vinci’s Demons’, ‘Person of Interest’) and Erin Levy (‘Mad Men’). The pilot was directed by Morten Tyldum (‘The Imitation Game’, ‘Passengers’). Production began in February 2018 on Season 2.
For those of you confused as to what is StarzPlay, it is an addition “add-on” channel you can get via Amazon Prime Video. This as an additional service to the main Amazon Prime Video offering, and will cost £4.99 a month, with a 7-day free trial… So if you can binge your way through the series in a week then cancel, you won’t pay anything! They also are home to the Brendan Gleeson/Harry Treadaway series ‘Mr. Mercedes‘, so now could be a good time to subscribe.
‘Counterpart‘ Season 1 premieres on StarzPlay from Friday, 28th September 2018.
