US network ABC has released a new trailer for Season 2 of hit series The Good Doctor, which introduces one of the new recurring characters, ‘House’ star Lisa Edelstein.

The series follows Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who relocates from a quiet country life to join a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the scepticism of his colleagues. Aiding him along the way is his one advocate, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff).

Edelstein is set to play expert oncologist Dr. Blaize, who is returning to the hospital at the request of Glassman after she was out serving a suspension. If you remember the end of last season, it was revealed Glassman had a brain tumour, so he’s asked Blaize to return to help him treat his cancer. She’s described as being “quite comfortable going toe to toe with Glassman and isn’t afraid to have a little fun while letting him know she calls the shots.”

Lisa Edelstein has recently been starring in ‘Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce’, and has popped up in shows such as ‘The Good Wife’, and ‘House Of Lies’. She is best known for her role as Dr. Lisa Cuddy, the long-suffering Dean of Medicine to Hugh Laurie’s ‘House’. Her new part on ‘The Good Doctor’ sees her reteaming with ‘House’ creator David Shore, who is also the man behind ‘The Good Doctor’.

It would appear from the trailer, the 2nd Season kicks off right where we left the characters at the end of season 1. Whilst Glassman had been convinced there was no way to save himself, Murphy pushes him to get a second opinion, which reveals there may be some hope after all. Meanwhile, the disruption to Shaun’s mental state caused him to make a mistake during surgery, leading to a finale cliffhanger which saw Shaun and his mentor, Glassman, heading into the office of Dr. Marcus Andrews (Hill Harper) to see if he still had a job.

As had previously been reported, Fiona Gubelmann (Dr. Morgan Reznick), Will Yun Lee (Dr. Alex Park), Christina Chang (Dr. Audrey Lim) and Paige Spara (Lea) have all been upped to series regular roles for the new season. That last one is an interesting addition, as Lea, Shaun’s former neighbour, left for Pittsburgh last season, but it looks like she has returned.

They join other series regulars Nicholas Gonzalez (Dr. Neil Melendez), Antonia Thomas (Dr. Claire Browne), Beau Garrett (Jessica Preston) and Tamlyn Tomita (Allegra Aoki). Despite appearing in the trailer, Chuku Modu, who played Dr. Jared Kalu, will not be back as a regular next season and is only guest starring in the opening episode.

The Good Doctor‘ returns to the UK in October 2018 on Sky Witness (exact date/time TBC).
