Rejoice Kiefer Sutherland fans! Netflix has stepped in to save ‘Designated Survivor‘ for a 3rd Season the streaming service announced this evening!
The new season, which will be branded as a Netflix Original series, will consist of a 10-episode run, and sees Sutherland return as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level cabinet member who is suddenly appointed President of the United States after a catastrophic attack on the US Capitol during the State of the Union.
As Season 3 begins, President Kirkman (Sutherland) will face a political reality… campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? The season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and “fake news.” Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.
Season 3 will go into production later this year and launch in 2019, with Neal Baer from global studio Entertainment One (eOne) taking over as showrunner. Whilst it’s always been a Netflix show to us in the UK, the series aired on US network ABC over the pond. Now, seasons 1 and 2 will come exclusively to Netflix in the US and Canada this “Fall” as well.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season 3 of ‘Designated Survivor’ with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer,” commented star Kiefer Sutherland “I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible.”
The show will be exec produced by Baer and creator David Guggenheim. Mark Gordon, Kiefer Sutherland, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood, and Peter Noah also EP.
“The continuation of the show via Netflix is a win-win for all involved,” adds Gordon. “The story of President Kirkman and those around him has not been fully told and we look forward to working with our new partner in continuing the show for a global audience.”
‘Designated Survivor‘ Season 3 will come to Netflix in the UK and worldwide in 2019.
