NYCC: New ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 2 Trailer Gives First Look At Spock. Jan UK Premiere On Netflix.

by Dave Elliott

New York Comic Con saw the release of a brand new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery which gives us a little more insight into what’s to come in Season 2. Plus our first look at Ethan Peck as Spock, complete with beard!

The trailer doesn’t give away too much, but we do get a better look at some of the new characters, and the revamped Klingons for this season. We know the main story revolves around “7 signals” which have been picked up by the Enterprise and Discovery. “Where they came from, who or what sent them, is really the drive of season 2,” commented showrunner Alex Kurtzman at the Madison Square Garden panel last night. “The Discovery crew is trying to figure out what they mean. Are they some kind of path? Are they a message? We don’t know. There’s a lot of interesting conversation about science versus faith. What does faith mean? Even Starfleet what they are and where they came from.”

The new season brings a host of new faces as well. Anson Mount’s (‘Inhumans’, ‘Hell On Wheels’) Captain Pike temporarily takes over the USS Discovery this season, which also introduces a number of members of the USS Enterprise crew. In the trailer, we also get our first look at Rebecca Romijn (‘The Librarians’) as Number One, Pike’s right-hand lady, who was played by the legendary Majel Barrett in the original series.

The trailer also gives us the briefest of looks at the new, revamped, Klingons for this season. The main change being that they have hair once again. This is explained by the fact that Klingons shave their heads during times of war and grow their hair during times of peace. Although, the Klingons we see in the trailer don’t really look all that peaceful!

The Klingons aren’t the only people with extra hair this year. Spock, played by Ethan Peck (’10 Things I Hate About You’, ‘In Time’, and grandson of actor Gregory Peck), makes a brief appearance at the end of the trailer sporting a full-on beard. Spock, who is the half-brother to Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham character, seems to be key to the Season 2 mystery. “As a child, I had the same vision, again and again. Now I understand where it must lead,” he says in the trailer. CBS has also released this photo of Ethan as Spock.

Star Trek: Discovery‘ Season 2 premieres in the UK on Friday, 18th January 2019 on Netflix, the day after it’s release on CBS All Access in the US.
