DC Has A ‘Plastic Man’ Movie In Development…

According to reports today, DC’s next big-screen superhero could be one of the bendy variety, as it’s revealed that Warner Bros have a ‘Plastic Man’ film in development!

Created by writer-artist Jack Cole, Plastic Man started out as a character in Quality Comics, but was swept up by DC along with heroes such as The Ray, Red Torpedo and Uncle Sam when Quality collapsed in the 1950s. Real name Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, he was an orphan who fell into a life of crime. During a heist gone wrong, he gets doused with an unidentified chemical liquid giving his body the properties of rubber, allowing him to stretch, bounce and turn himself into any shape. Rather than stick to his criminal past, he decides to use his new powers for good instead.

Over the years, Plastic Man has had numerous team-ups with other DC character, most notably Batman, Mister Terrific and even becoming a member of the Justice League. He’s known for being somewhat eccentric (plus a little unstable!) and is usually the comic relief in any team he joins.

Billed as a “comedic adventure”, DC/WB has hired up-and-coming writer Amanda Idoko to pen the script for this new attempt to bringPlastic Man to the cinema. The character has never actually been made into live action before, however, he has appeared in numerous animated DC shows, including his own show in the late 70s/early 80s. There were a few attempts at a live-action film in the 90s, including a script written by The Wachowskis in 1995, but it never made it to screen.

For those of you out there that are fans of ‘The Flash’ tv show, and are thinking the character sounds awfully familiar, Plastic Man and Elongated Man (aka Ralph Dibny) are two separate DC characters with similar properties. Although, Plastic Man is arguably a bit more malleable that Ralph, as he can stretch to an infinite size and poke holes in his body making him basically invulnerable. Ralph stretching is restricted by his body mass, and a hole in his body could kill him.

It seems like the ‘Plastic Man’ movie is in the early development stages right now, but we’ll let you know if we hear more.
