Netflix Renews ‘The Last Kingdom’ For Season 4

Netflix has given a nice early Christmas present to The Last Kingdom fans. In a (rather amusing) video posted to the official Twitter account, they have announced the series has been renewed for Season 4.

Based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories novel series, ‘The Last Kingdom’ follows young warrior and outsider, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), on a fierce mission to reclaim his birthright. The series combines real historical figures and events with fictional characters during the reign of Alfred the Great, who as King of Wessex fought off a Viking invasion.

It would be fair to say, the historical drama has had a bumpy ride when it comes to broadcasters up until now, so it’s nice to see it get a straight and quick renewal. It was originally a co-production for BBC Two & BBC America produced by Carnival Films. BBC America dropped out after Season 1, so Netflix stepped in as a co-producer for Season 2. Then BBC Two dropped out so 3rd Season aired exclusively on Netflix… Much to the annoyance of some UK fans without Netflix subscriptions…

Here is the video of Uhtred and the gang making the announcement.

Seasons 1 to 3 of ‘The Last Kingdom‘ can be found on Netflix UK.
