Disney+ Considering A ‘Willow’ Series

Disney is in talks to possibly bring back another classic movie, ‘Willow’, this time in tv series form on its new Disney+ streaming service.

‘Willow’ was a fantasy adventure followed Warwick Davis as Willow Ufgood, a young farmer and conjurer who discovers a baby girl in a reed basket on a nearby river. What he doesn’t know at the time is the baby is supposed to fulfil a prophecy which would see the downfall of the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh), and had been smuggled away by the midwife to keep her safe… Much to the anger of the queen. With the help of a mercenary Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and warrior Sorsha (Joanne Whalley), Willow embarks on a quest to take the child to safety.

The film was directed by Ron Howard based on a story by George Lucas. It was Howard who revealed on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that he, along with ‘Solo’ writer Jon Kasdan, had been in discussions about a series with Disney. “We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+,” the director commented. “And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

Whilst some reports are touting this as a “reboot”, but it seems that it would more likely be some sort of continuation, as Howard confirmed he would definitely want Davis involved… And if you’ve ever met the legendary Warwick, you know he’s not going to say refuse an offer like that, as he’s been talking about bringing back ‘Willow’ for years! “Warwick will be in it,” adds Howard. “Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.”

If Disney does decide to run with ‘Willow’, the fantasy series would be the latest in a great line up the mouse house has prepared for Disney+. That includes Jon Favreau’s ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian‘, a ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ series with Diego Luna reprising the role of Andor, and a new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars; Various series based on Marvel characters such as ‘Loki’, ‘WandaVision’, and ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’; Plus a High School Musical series, a ‘Monsters Inc.’ animated series, and a host of other live-action, animated, and reality-based content.

We still don’t yet know exactly when Disney+ will launch in the UK. The new streaming service will launch in the US in November 2019, with plans to launch in “nearly all major regions of the world within the next two years.” We’ll let you know when we hear more.
