Our Top 5 Favourite Characters In ‘Game Of Thrones’

We’re at the midway point of ‘Game Of Thrones’ final season, so we thought this might be a good time to reflect on some of the characters in the series. Some are still with us. Some have passed on to one of the 7 heavens… or 7 hells… or are feasting in the Drowned God’s halls… Or joined the starry khalassar to ride across the sky… There appears to be a lot of places you can go in Westeros after you die! Some we loved. Some we loved to hate. These are our top 5 favourite characters from ‘Game Of Thrones’.

5. Theon Greyjoy

Theon’s story has been such a rollercoaster. From ward of the Starks at Winterfell, to his traitorous actions against Robb Stark and taking Winterfell, to his capture, torture, losing his “favourite toy” body part, and servitude as the twisted Reek to Ramsay Snow, it was hard to see how he could ever come back from that… but he did. Thanks to the amazing work of Alfie Allen, and some great writing from the ‘Game Of Thrones’ team, Theon has probably the most epic redemption arc in the series, as he rescues his sister Yara, and heads back to defend the north at Winterfell, the very stronghold he tried to take all those years ago. It is possibly the most epic, but personal journey in the series.

4. Daenerys Targaryen

Speaking of epic journeys, Daenerys also had a pretty epic story to tell. When we first meet her, she, along with her brother Viserys Targaryen, are in Essos, having been smuggled away as children to stop them being murdered during Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. She’s young, somewhat meek, and totally under the control of her brother, who will stop at nothing to regain his “birthright” of the Iron Throne. But look at her now… She’s been burned alive (it didn’t work), she has dragons which she also rides, he has an army at her back… Although that is, admittedly, somewhat smaller than the one she came with following last week’s episode. But I certainly wouldn’t bet against her. Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, the Breaker of Chains. You don’t get a title like that without going through some serious stuff.

3. Arya Stark

Across 8 Seasons, Arya has gone from “Aww, adorable little tomboy” to “holy crap, she could kill us all with her pinky finger!” Arya has never been your traditional Westeros lady. Always more interested in bows and swords than dresses and jewellery. But from the moment she saw her father get executed, everything changed. She embarked on a journey which would take her across the sea to Essos to train with the guild of assassins known as The Faceless Men, a deadly group with the ability to take the faces of people and take out anyone who can pay their fee. Something Arya used to get her revenge on those who had wronged the Starks when she returned to Westeros. Her incredible skill with a blade, coupled with her assassin training to move silently, makes her a deadly force to be reckoned with… as some “people” found out last week… Whatever you do, you don’t want to end up on Arya’s “list”.

2. Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion is impossible not to love, and that is largely down to Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of “The Imp”. Whilst he begins as the brilliant, but drunken, whoring, youngest son of Tywin Lannister, he has calmed down somewhat in the later seasons… Although is always there with a smart remark, and a mug of wine in his hand. Tyrion has, arguably, had some of the best lines in the show. Often those lines get him in trouble, but he has yet to find a corner of which he couldn’t find his way out. Now, as Hand Of The Queen, he finds himself facing a final battle against his own sister to place Daenerys on the throne. I think Tyrion may need some more wine before the season has ended.

1. Olenna Tyrell

Oh, Olenna… How we miss you. Portrayed by the amazing Diana Rigg, the grandmother to House Tyrell was never one to mince words and knew how to play the game of thrones perfectly. She revelled in the cutting remark, but knew when and where to hold back, and when to strike. Her “The Queen of Thorns” nickname was well earned. Whether it was telling Cersi “I wonder if you’re the worst person I’ve ever met. At a certain age, it’s hard to recall, but the truly vile do stand out through the years.” Or commenting “I’ve known a great many clever men. I’ve outlived them all. You know why? I ignored them.” Even in death, she managed to get in one final stab, telling Jamie she was the one who killed Joffery, but only after he’d handed her poison to drink to make sure she didn’t suffer. OT was the OG of Westeros.
