A few last stragglers, as news drops that FOX has predictably cancelled legal drama ‘Proven Innocent‘, whilst ABC has renewed ‘The Goldbergs‘ for Season 7 and spin-off ‘Schooled‘ for Season 2.
‘Proven Innocent’ was a legal drama set in a wrongful conviction firm from‘Empire’ co-creator Danny Strong and David Elliot (‘Knightfall’). Led by a fierce and fearless female lawyer (Rachelle Lefevre – ‘Under the Dome’) with a hunger for justice, the team reopens investigations, putting their own lives in danger to exonerate the innocent that were ‘proven’ guilty.
The series has been steadily declining in the ratings since it’s launch, so the cancellation doesn’t really come as a big surprise. Kelsey Grammer (‘Frasier’), Russell Hornsby (‘Grimm’), Nikki M. James (‘BrainDead’), Vincent Kartheiser (‘Mad Men’) and Riley Smith (‘Frequency’) also starred.
The return of ‘The Goldbergs’ and ‘Schooled’ hasn’t officially been announced by ABC, but was revealed by show creator Adam F. Goldberg via his Twitter account. It seems there are a few bits of paperwork to still fill out, but he couldn’t contain his excitement any longer:
While the network and studio continue to debate contract stuff I don’t understand, I can officially announce that another hour long block of 1980something and 1990something is on the way!!!!!! Begin the @GoldbergsTimer!!!!!! I ???????? the @goldnerds #schooled #thegoldbergs https://t.co/00LNrCH9k7

‘The Goldbergs’ follows the titular family’s escapades in 1980s Pennsylvania. Narrator Adam (Sean Giambrone, with his future self voiced by Patton Oswald) just wants to grow up as a normal, nerdy teenager – and possibly become the world’s greatest filmmaker. That looks pretty unlikely when he’s constantly battling his own family: there’s his smothering but well-meaning mother Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey – ‘Bridesmaids’), his hot-tempered dad Murray (Jeff Garlin – ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’), rebellious and musical sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia), emotional and idiotic brother Barry (Troy Gentile) and beloved grandfather Pops (George Segal – ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’). While the Goldbergs might not always see eye to eye, in this sweet-natured comedy family always comes first.
‘Schooled’ takes place at William Penn Academy in the 1990s. Erica’s best friend Lainey (AJ Michalka – ‘She-Ra and the Princess of Power’) finds her career as a rock musician stalling and decides her only option is to go back to school and become a music teacher. It soon becomes clear, however, that teaching is a lot harder than she imagined. With her old Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows – ‘SNL’), eccentric Coach Mellor (Bryan Callen – ‘MADtv’) and young, enthusiastic super-teacher CB (Brett Dier – ‘Jane the Virgin’), Lainey learns that being a teacher isn’t easy; it’s a kind of heroism.
‘Proven Innocent‘ is currently airing on Universal TV, whilst ‘The Goldbergs‘ and ‘Schooled‘ both premiere on E4 in the UK.
