WarnerMedia Orders ‘Gremlins’ Animated Prequel For New Streaming Service

WarnerMedia has ordered an animated ‘Gremlins’ prequel, Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai, for their new streaming service it has been announced today.

In the animated television adaptation, we travel back to 1920s Shanghai to reveal the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colourful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

The 10-episodes, 30 min series will be produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Animation. Tze Chun (‘Gotham’, ‘Once Upon a Time’) is set to write the show, with and Darryl Frank (‘The Americans, ‘Animaniacs,’ ‘Amazing Stories’), Justin Falvey (‘The Americans,’ ‘Animaniacs,’ ‘Amazing Stories’) and Sam Register (‘Teen Titans Go!’ and the upcoming series ‘Animaniacs’) exec producing. Chun and Brendan Hay (‘Dawn of the Croods,’ ‘Robot Chicken’) serve as co-EPs, with Dan Krall (‘Coraline,’ ‘Scooby-Doo!’) serving as supervising producer.

At the moment, it’s unclear exactly when the new streaming service will launch, although it is thought a “Beta” version of it, which won’t include original content, could appear as early as late 2019. It is also not entirely clear how this will affect WB’s other streaming service, DC Universe. WarnerMedia controls a host of brands including HBO, Warner Bros., TNT, TBS, CNN, DC Entertainment, New Line, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Turner Classic Movies, truTV and others, so it’s not like they are short of a back catalogue of entertainment on which to draw shows, even without the DC content. Of course, none of this really affects the UK, as neither DC Universe or the new Warner streaming service are available over here.

WarnerMedia has not given a premiere date for Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai, but we would expect it to appear when they fully launch the new streaming service in the US in 2020. As to where it ends up in the UK is anyone’s guess…
