‘Mindhunter’ Season 2 Gets August Premiere Date On Netflix

Season 2 of brilliant Netflix serial killer drama Mindhunter will arrive Friday, 16th August 2019, director David Fincher has revealed.

Created by Joe Penhall (‘The Road’), the series stars Jonathan Groff (‘Glee’, ‘Frozen’, ‘Looking’) & Holt McCallany (‘Blue Bloods’, ‘CSI: Miami’, ‘Heroes’) star as FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench who set out on a sinister investigative odyssey to discover the brutal answers. As members of the FBI’s Behavioural Sciences Unit, they start to interview serial killers in an effort to help solve crimes. Helping Ford and Tench is Wendy Carr, played by Anna Torv (‘Fringe’), a psychology professor who joins the pair at the Behavioural Sciences Unit to help unravel the minds of the serial killers.

The series also stars Cotter Smith (‘The Post’, ‘The Americans’) as Shepard, the unit chief who oversees the trio, and Hannah Gross (‘Unless’) who plays Debbie, Ford’s girlfriend. Additionally, Season 1 featured a phenomenal, breakout, performance by Cameron Britton (‘The Umbrella Academy’) as serial killer Ed Kemper, who Ford & Tench interview, and becomes as fascinated with them as they are with him.

David Fincher, who exec producers and directs a number of the episodes, spoke to KCRW’s ‘The Treatment’ podcast recently, revealing the ‘Mindhunter’ Season 2 premiere date. It’s a really interesting interview and well worth a listen.

Netflix has not yet released an official synopsis of Season 2, however, we do know it is set from 1979-1981, two years after the first season and will include the “Atlanta child murders”. Despite the name, this was the work of a serial killer who murdered 28 children, along with adolescents and adults, over a 2-year period.

One interesting device in Season 1 was the use of little vignettes each episode featuring the notorious BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader (played by Sonny Valicenti), apparently preparing to commit murder. At no point does this character ever cross paths with FBI agents Ford or Tench, and seems to just be there as a set up of what’s to come. However, it’s unclear if we will see more of him this year, as BTK wasn’t “active” during the period covered this season.

Mindhunter‘ Season 2 premieres Friday, 16th August 2019 on Netflix UK and Worldwide.
