Amazon Gives Adaption Of Brian K. Vaughan’s ‘Paper Girls’ Graphic Novel A Series Commitment

Amazon has been raiding their graphic novel shelf again and handed a series commitment to an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s best-selling book Paper Girls, it has been announced.

For those of you unfamiliar with the graphic novel, it tells the story of four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls, who, in the early hours after Halloween of 1988, uncover the most important story of all time, when the town is struck by an invasion from a mysterious force from the future. Erin, Mac, KJ, and Tiffany soon find themselves unwillingly caught in a conflict between two warring factions of time-travellers. As they travel between our present, the past, and the future – they encounter future versions of themselves and now must choose to embrace or reject their fate.

The adaptation is being written by ‘Toy Story 4’ co-writer Stephany Folsom, based on the graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. She will also exec produce alongside Vaughan, with Legendary Television and Brad Pitt’s Plan B (’12 Years A Slave’, ‘Moonlight’) serving as production companies.

Brian K. Vaughan is doing rather well with tv adaptions at the moment, as he was also the creator of the original comic books ‘Marvel’s Runaways’ which was adapted by Hulu, and ‘Y: The Last Man’, which is currently being adapted into a tv series by FX. He is also the creator of the epic space opera/fantasy comic book ‘Saga’, which I would love to see someone attempt to adapt as a tv series, but no one has yet had the guts to tackle it.

Amazon has been building an impressive line up of genre-based programming over the past few years. Along with the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ series (of which Stephany Folsom will be serving as consulting producer), they also have ‘The Boys’ premiering later this month, and fantasy series ‘Carnival Row’ in August. Other future confirmed series include an adaptation of high fantasy novels ‘The Wheel of Time‘ starring Rosamund Pike, a remake of Channel 4’s ‘Utopia‘, and an adaption of Naomi Alderman’s ‘The Power’. Additional projects in development at Amazon include a ‘Conan the Barbarian’ series, a show based on Iain M. Banks ‘Culture’ novels, and a series based on William Gibson’s ‘The Peripheral from ‘Westworld’ creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

On top of all that you have a final season of ‘The Man In The High Castle’, a 4th Season of The Expanse, and they picked up the UK rights to the highly anticipated ‘Star Trek: Picard’ series. Now is an excellent time to pick up an Amazon Prime subscription!

It’s, obviously, way too early to announce premiere dates for Paper Girls, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
