Netflix Orders ‘Vikings’ Sequel Series ‘Vikings: Valhalla’ From Creator Michael Hirst & Writer Jeb Stuart

Netflix has picked up a sequel to History series ‘Vikings’ from series creator Michael Hirst and writer Jeb Stuart titled Vikings: Valhalla the streaming service has announced this evening.

The new saga begins 100 years after the original series concludes and dramatizes the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived – Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror (also a Viking descendant). These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever-changing and evolving Europe. This is the explosive next chapter of the Vikings legend.

The original ‘Vikings’ series, which begins it’s 6th and final season soon, followed the story of Ragnar Lothbrok and his descendants from early raids in England and the fierce battles of the Great Heathen Army with some extremely memorable death and carnage along the way.

The new drama is being written by film writer Jeb Stuart, whose previous work includes movies such as ‘The Fugitive’ and ‘Die Hard’. Hirst is exec producing, alongside Stuart and Morgan O’Sullivan (‘Vikings’, ‘Penny Dreadful’). MGM Television serves as the studio.

“I am beyond excited that we are announcing the continuation of our Vikings saga,” commented original series creator Michael Hirst. “I know that the millions of our fans across the globe will be thrilled by the belief being shown in our show by MGM and Netflix. Jeb Stuart, a truly wonderful writer, will bring new story-lines and a powerful visceral vision to stories about some of the most famous Vikings known to history.”

This is a bit of a coup for Netflix, as the original show ran on History in the US with Amazon and Hulu having the streaming rights, and premiered Amazon in the UK, coming later to the History Channel. The streaming wars battle for new shows seems to be in full swing… Ragnar would be proud!

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Michael, Morgan, Jeb and Netflix on the next chapter in the incredible Vikings universe,” adds Steve Stark, MGM’s President of Television Production and Development. “Valhalla has been a labour of love for everyone involved and as we look ahead to the continuation of this great saga, we are excited to know that fans the world over will have the opportunity to continue with the series on its new home at Netflix.”

The 6th and final season of ‘Vikings‘ premieres on Amazon Prime UK from Thursday, 5th December 2019. For our American readers, the season premieres Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at 9PM ET/PT on History in the US.
