Geektown’s Game & Movie Of The Year

We have come to the point in the awards where we step away from TV and focus on the games you’ve been playing and movies you’ve been watching in the last 12 months. On the gaming side, it was a close battle between two monster franchises. On the movie side, there was really only ever going to be one winner…

Geektown’s Game Of The Year

Nominees: Apex Legends, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare, Death Stranding, Disco Elysium, Gears 5, Metro Exodus, Planet Zoo, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, The Outer Worlds

Bronze: Gears 5

Silver: Call Of Duty Modern Warfare

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

This was a really close battle between the top two spots, but in the end, Star Wars fandom won out, as for the first time in a long time, the franchise produced a really great video game in ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’.

Set after the execution of Order 66, you take control of Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan), a Jedi Padawan-turned-fugitive, who must fight for survival as he explores the mysteries of a long-extinct civilization in hopes of rebuilding the Jedi Order. You’re help along your quest by a former Jedi Knight-turned-mercenary Cere Junda (Debra Wilson), owner and pilot of the Stinger Mantis Greez Dritus (Daniel Roebuck), and your little droid pal BD-1.

Despite what some gaming companies want to believe, single-player, story-driven gaming is very much alive and well. There are a lot of people out there who don’t want huge multiplayer battleground. Just a solid solo story, and well-executed gameplay, which ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ provides in bucket loads… Also, lightsabers… because who doesn’t want lightsabers…

Geektown’s Movie Of The Year

Nominees: Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Deadwood The Movie, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, Joker, Spider-Man: Far From Home, The Lion King

Bronze: The Lion King

Silver: Joker

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Avengers: Endgame

What else could it have been, other than ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the spectacular conclusion to the Marvel MCU Infinity Saga. It was funny. It was heartbreaking. It had time travel, slacker Thor, and an amazing money shot containing nearly every Marvel hero. It was the perfect way to end an incredible run of movies which have entertained us for the past ten years.

Whilst the MCU is moving into a new phase on the big screen with a mix of old and new characters, we are also getting some new tv shows, thanks to Disney+, which sees the return of Falcon & Winter Soldier, Scarlett Witch and Vision in WandaVision, Hawkeye, and of course, Loki. 2020 looks like it is going to be another amazing year for Marvel.
