Geektown Awards – Most Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie Of 2020

We have reached the final few categories, as we head into The Most Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie Of 2020. This is always an interesting set of results, as it can be really hard to predict what people will go for. The TV category was extremely close, with less than 1% separating the top two. Gaming had a bit more of a clear winner, I just hope and pray it doesn’t let people down. However, the Movies category threw up the most interesting result, with only 3% between the top four picks.

These categories handed out some solid results as all of the “Most Anticipated” winners last year went on to win Gold in their respective categories this year. Let’s hope you guys manage to get it right again! Here is what you voted for as your Most Anticipated TV Series, Game & Movie Of 2020.

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Star Trek: Picard

It was a big battle of the fandoms this year, with Star Wars, Star Trek, Marvel, DC and The Witcher all having new TV shows landing in the UK. But only one could “engage” with the audience and “make it so”, and that is Star Trek: Picard.

The new Star Trek series features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as the venerable Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on ‘Star Trek: Next Generation’. The series will follow this iconic character in the next chapter of his life. The new cast helping Picard includes Alison Pill (‘The Newsroom’) as Dr. Agnes Jurati, Harry Treadaway (‘Penny Dreadful’) as Narek, Isa Briones (‘American Crime Story: Versace’) as Dahj, Santiago Cabrera (‘Salvation’) as Cristobal “Chris” Rios, Evan Evagora as Elnor, and Michelle Hurd (‘Blindspot’) as Raffi Musiker. The show also features some old faces to go along with the new ones, with Jonathan Frakes (Riker) Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Jeri Ryan (Seven Of Nine), and Brent Spiner (Data) will all be making appearances.

Star Trek: Picard‘ Season 1 premieres Friday, 24th January 2020 on Amazon Prime in the UK (and around the world) and Thursday, January 23, 2020, on CBS All Access in the USA.

The Most Anticipated Game Of 2020

Nominees: Beyond Good & Evil 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Halo Infinite, Marvel’s Avengers, Psychonauts 2, System Shock, The Last of Us Part II, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, Watch Dogs Legion

Bronze: Halo Infinite

Silver: The Last of Us Part II

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Marvel’s Avengers

Marvel fans win out again with the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers video game. Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, the people behind the ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Deus Ex’ franchises, this story-driven, third-person action-adventure game lets the player take control of various Avengers characters.

The story begins on “A-Day” as the Avengers are launching a second headquarters in San Francisco and a shiny new helicarrier of their very own! However, things go south fast as the group are blamed for a catastrophic incident which levels half the city and apparently kills Captain America, leading to the Avengers disbanding… Skip forward five years, superheroes are outlawed and the city is under the control of the somewhat sinister group, A.I.M. When a young Kamala Khan (aka Ms Marvel) uncovers a shocking conspiracy, she sets out to bring together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, avenge Captain America’s death, and uncover the true culprit behind A-Day.

Marvel’s Avengers is currently due for release on Friday, 15th May 2020 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

The Most Anticipated Movie Of 2020

Nominees: Artemis Fowl, Bill & Ted Face the Music, Birds of Prey, Black Widow, Dune, Ghostbusters 2020, The Eternals, Top Gun: Maverick, Uncharted, Wonder Woman 1984

Bronze: Black Widow

Silver: Bill & Ted Face the Music

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Top Gun: Maverick

This year’s movie selection is an interesting mix. With Star Wars on a cinematic break, Marvel essentially rebooting the MCU, and DC’s films being very hit and miss, it was really hard to see what would come out on top this year. But it is a year for nostalgia, as our voters felt the need… the need for speed… once again, with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ lands in UK cinemas, Friday, 17th July 2020.

So that’s it for The Geektown Awards for another year. Hope you all have a fantastic 2020, and we look forward to seeing you on the site, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Here’s to an entertainment-packed 12 months!
