NBC Hands Massive 3 Season Renewal To Medical Drama ‘New Amsterdam’

NBC has put its faith in the doctors of New Amsterdam, as the US network hands out a massive 3 season renewal to the medical drama.

Inspired by the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama stars Ryan Eggold (‘The Blacklist’) as the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director, who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital – the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the president of the United States under one roof – and return it to the glory that put it on the map.

The series also stars Janet Montgomery (‘The Romanoffs’) as Dr. Lauren Bloom, Freema Agyeman (‘Doctor Who’) as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Jocko Sims (‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’) as Dr. Floyd Reynolds, Anupam Kher (‘Silver Linings Playbook’) as Dr. Vijay Kapoor, and Tyler Labine (‘StartUp’) as Dr. Iggy Frome.

The medical series ranks the 5th highest-rated drama on live viewing for NBC, behind the juggernaut that is ‘This Is Us’ (which the network also renewed last year for 3 Seasons), and the ‘Chicago’ franchise shows. However, the series also does extremely well on catch up viewing, ranking 2nd (behind ‘This Is Us’ again) for the network, and 3rd across all broadcast networks. It also helps that the show is owned by NBCUniversal, meaning they get to pocket the profits, rather than having to fork out to a third party, making it a much more valuable commodity.

New Amsterdam‘ Season 1 and the first half of Season 2 is available right now in the UK on Amazon Prime. Season 1 also airs on More4 in the UK.
