8 Video Game Movies Coming Out In 2020 And Beyond
Many dedicated gamers don’t get excited about movies unless they touch on things they truly love. Fortunately, 2020 and beyond is jam-packed with flicks about video games and not just any titles. Some of the best-rated games of the past ten years will feature on the big screen over the next few years. Here are some of them:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Release Date: 14 February 2020
Sonic the Hedgehog should have been out by November last year. But director Jeff Fowler’s team turned Sonic into a half-human, half hedgehog animal; gaming fans made their outrage know.
First off, people complained of Sonic’s frighteningly ripped legs. Then they directed their outrage toward his upsetting human-like teeth, at which point directors delayed the movie’s release date.
For the uninitiated, Sonic the Hedgehog movie will carry the same premise from the video game. Sonic escapes his alien world after some forces try to hunt him down for his super-speed powers to find refuge on earth. But he falls into trouble with the government who also wants him for the same reasons.
Monster Hunter
Release Date: 4 September 2020
Although the Monster Hunter movie won’t be precisely like the video game, a recent teaser shows there are plenty of similarities. Released June last year, the movie’s preview showed actors Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa fighting off Diablos, the giant monster in Monster Hunters.
Jaa and Jovovich will star as a military officer and a hunter in a world ridden by monsters. The two unites amidst a war against the monsters, and the hunter has to show the army official how to handle them.
Uncharted
Release Date: 1 January 2021
Uncharted drew inspiration from the video game of the same name. But for some reasons, producers can’t decide who will direct it. Six directors so far have been hired and later laid off, including Travis Knight, the man behind the Transformers.
The main problem seems to be scheduling now that Sony wants the movie to be out by Dec 18. Cast wise, Uncharted will feature Tom Holland as Nathan Drake while Mark Wahlberg will play Sully.
Uncharted will pay more attention to Drake’s early life in the first adaption of the video game. That means you can expect a sequel in the next several years. But before then, we hope the flick will be as enthralling as the video game.
Resident Evil Reboot

Similar to the video game franchise, the Resident Evil movie series has been wildly successful since its launch in 2002. They haven’t always been well-received, but they’ve been popular with fans.
Against that backdrop, Resident Evil movies and series keep appearing on TV screens across North America and the UK. Netflix, for example, has already okayed eight episodes of a TV show.
There are also plans to launch a new Resident Evil movie. But based on the scant details about the flick, there’s little indication it will be out this year. What’s out, though, is a slew of video and slot games themed about Resident Evil.

Mortal Kombat

James Wan got the producer’s role in 2015 and brought in a few famous names to work with him. Simon McQuoid became the flick’s director soon afterwards, and they’ve been working on the project ever since.
Similar to the original movie, the upcoming flick will be a martial-arts fantasy film deeply influenced by the Mortal Kombat video game. Filming is already done, but fans will have to wait until early next year for post-production to end.
Metal Gear Solid

Once dubbed an all-time video game franchise, Metal Gear Solid is coming to a theatre near you as soon as 2021. The latest update from movie maker Jordan Robert says that he’s already liked the scripts forwarded to him and he’s planning to work with a specific actor.
That being said, Roberts is yet to reveal the specific date the upcoming flick will be out. If you’ve been following reports about the film, you probably understand why.
Metal Gear Solid has been in the making for over a decade. It’s been postponed over and over again. But ever since Roberts took charge, there’s hope something is being done to turn the famous video game into a movie.
Duke Nukem

There is some discussion about whether this film is still in development or not, but back in 2018, it was announced that the classic Duke Nukem video game is set to be immortalised with a movie starring John Cena. However, if it does go ahead, no one suits the lead role better than the WWE superstar.
A side by side comparison of the video game character and Cena looks eerily similar. But that’s obviously not everything that’s required to make a good movie. Producers haven’t found the right scriptwriter yet, meaning they aren’t sure the wrestler will like it.
However, Duke Nukem has the recipe for an extremely fun film. The video game it’s based on was exciting and action-filled, and also slightly bonkers. It centred on adventures, friendships, and lots of blowing stuff up… a lot… If the right production got a hold of it, there is potential to turn the flick into an instant success.
Sleeping Dogs

An action film featuring IP Man? Book a date, please! Seriously, Donnie Yen is a top tier actor who could turn any action flick into a global hit. With his upcoming flick, he’s assuming the role of an undercover policeman out to take down gangsters throughout Hong Kong.
Early reports say Sleeping Dogs will be inspired by both the video game of the same name and the ‘Hard Boiled’ movie. There’s little information about who will join Yen, its budget or when it will come out.
Yen first showed interest in turning Sleeping Dogs into a movie in 2018. But after no one related to the video game backed up his idea, hype around the film died down. Hopefully, the project will come through sooner rather than later.
