Glee Reboot, Poison Ivy Series, Stephen Graham’s Nocturne & Sherlock & Daughter | Geektown Radio 508

Dave and Domingos review Nocturne, Sherlock & Daughter, Crystal Lake and more, plus Ryan Murphy's Glee revival, DC's Poison Ivy series, the latest renewals and UK TV premiere dates.

by Dave Elliott

We’re back with another packed episode of Geektown Radio, and this week Dave is joined by Domingos to discuss some fascinating new TV shows, a rather bonkers action movie, and a whole heap of entertainment news! On the agenda this week, we have Ryan Murphy bringing back ‘Glee‘, a potential ‘Poison Ivy’ TV series from the world of DC, Stephen Graham getting seriously creepy in ‘Nocturne‘, and a new spin on the world’s greatest detective in ‘Sherlock & Daughter‘. Plus, we have renewals, cancellations, premiere dates, and all the usual geeky goodness!

We kick things off with a look back at MCM London Comic Con, where Dave and Domingos managed to briefly cross paths between running around the various panels. All of Geektown’s videos from the event are now available on our YouTube channel, including panels featuring the casts of Daredevil: Born Again, GTA V, Resident Evil, and plenty more. If you haven’t seen Nolan North doing his Jason Statham impression during the voice actor panel, you really should. It’s absolutely hilarious!

What We’ve Been Watching

Domingos has been getting into the Halloween spirit with a selection of horror and action. First up is ‘Bad Day at the Office’, an independently produced action movie starring John Hannah (The Mummy) and Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill). Shot entirely from a first-person perspective using GoPros, it’s something like a first-person shooter video game brought to life, with plenty of chaotic action. Domingos even experienced it in 4DX, which sounds like quite the ride!

He also reviews ‘Crystal Lake‘, the Friday the 13th prequel series starring Linda Cardellini (Dead to Me), which explores the story of Pamela Voorhees and the events surrounding her son Jason. Domingos is hugely impressed by the performances, atmosphere, and cinematography, describing it as a series which really elevates the horror franchise.

Rounding out his reviews is ‘Black Annis‘, an atmospheric independent British horror short inspired by Midlands folklore. The Leicester-produced film offers a very different kind of horror, relying on tension and atmosphere rather than buckets of blood.

Before diving into his reviews, Dave takes a moment to remember two Star Trek legends we sadly lost recently, Sir Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Walter Koenig (Star Trek). The pair discuss their incredible legacies, personal memories, and the impact they had on generations of fans.

Moving on to television, Dave has been watching ‘Nocturne’, the new Apple TV thriller featuring Stephen Graham (Adolescence) as Jurek Walter, a disturbingly intelligent serial killer. Imagine Sherlock Holmes if he were evil, completely unhinged, and had a touch of Hannibal Lecter thrown in for good measure! Alongside Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Graham delivers a wonderfully unsettling performance in a mystery involving a missing child who unexpectedly reappears after three years.

For something considerably lighter, there’s ‘Eternally Yours‘, the new Paramount+ vampire comedy from the people behind the US version of Ghosts. The series follows a married vampire couple whose relationship has become rather stale after 500 years together. Throw in an eccentric vampire family, a human boyfriend, and some highly questionable memory-wiping, and you have a comedy with a very familiar Ghosts-style sense of humour.

Finally, Dave has been watching ‘Sherlock & Daughter’, which arrives on HBO Max UK this week. David Thewlis (Fargo) plays an older, somewhat grumpier Sherlock Holmes, who finds himself drawn into a conspiracy involving a mysterious criminal organisation known as the Red Thread. Meanwhile, a young American woman played by Blu Hunt (The Originals) arrives in London claiming to be his daughter. With Dougray Scott (Batwoman) as Professor Moriarty, it’s another entertaining reinvention of the famous detective, and one Dave found extremely bingeable!

TV News: Glee Returns, Poison Ivy Gets Her Own Series, And More!

In this week’s news, we have the rather surprising announcement that ‘Glee’ is officially making a comeback! Ryan Murphy’s musical comedy has been ordered for a revival on Disney+ and Hulu, although quite what form it will take remains a mystery. Will we see the original students returning as teachers? A completely new generation of singing teenagers? Or something else entirely? Dave and Domingos discuss the possibilities, along with some of the complicated history surrounding the original series.

Over in the DC universe, there are plans in development for a ‘Poison Ivy’ television series, with The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc potentially involved as a producer. Given how brilliantly The Penguin worked as a character-focused crime drama, could a similar approach work for Batman’s plant-loving adversary? Or should they embrace the more fantastical side of the character? There are plenty of interesting directions they could take.

We also have the news that Criminal Minds: Evolution is coming to an end with Season 20, while Netflix has been unusually generous with the renewals! The Diplomat is returning for Season 5, alongside new seasons of Haunted Hotel and The Hunting Wives. There are also renewals for American Horror Story, Coven Academy, Carrie, and the BBC crime drama This City Is Ours.

Elsewhere, we have new premiere dates for Cunk on Cinema, Sweetpea, Tracker, Bosch: Start of Watch, and Mayor of Kingstown. Plus, Channel 5 has picked up Wentworth: Beyond Bars, and Sky is launching John Bishop’s Comedy Night at the Coliseum, which sounds suspiciously like a replacement for the BBC’s departing Live at the Apollo!

What’s Coming To TV This Week?

As always, we finish with our look at the biggest UK TV premieres arriving over the coming days, and there are some excellent choices this week!

Highlights include NCIS: New York, with LL Cool J returning as Sam Hanna, the second season of Netflix’s excellent spy thriller Black Doves, and Sherlock & Daughter making its HBO Max UK debut.

We also have Return to Paradise returning to BBC One, the second season of Prime Video’s The Assassin starring Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard) and Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor), and the long-awaited return of Hudson & Rex.

Rounding things off are S.W.A.T. Exiles, which sees Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) leading a new team on Sky One, and Season 2 of Stephen King’s The Institute on MGM+.

There’s certainly no shortage of television to keep us occupied this week!
