Liv Tyler Leaves ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ After 1 Season

9-1-1: Lone Star has only just launched in the UK, but don’t get too attached to one of its stars, as it has been announced Liv Tyler won’t be returning for Season 2.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’, explores the high-pressure experiences of police officers, firefighters and dispatchers who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. These emergency responders must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in their own lives.

Liv Tyler (‘The Leftovers’) had been starring as Michelle Blake, the paramedic Emergency Medical Services captain, however, she has decided she won’t be returning for the second season. Whilst on the surface, this somewhat mirrors what happened with Connie Britton in the main ‘9-1-1’ series, in that case, Britton had only signed a one year contract, whereas Tyler was signed for multiple seasons. It appears to be a practical decision on the part of Tyler, who actually lives in London with her partner and two young children. Due to COVID restrictions on travel, and the long commute from London to LA where ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ is shot, she approached producers over the Summer about leaving.

“What a thrill it was having a movie star of Liv Tyler’s stature to help us launch the first season of 9-1-1: Lone Star,” commented Tim Minear, series’ co-creator and showrunner, in a statement. “We loved working with Liv and will be forever indebted to her for her haunting, powerful portrayal of Michelle Blake. While we were able to tell a complete chapter in Michelle’s story, as with Connie Britton on our mothership, we also feel like there are more stories to be told. The door here will always be open for a return.”

Whilst Tyler’s character isn’t been recast, the show is in need of a new Emergency Medical Services captain, which is where the previously announced addition of Gina Torres comes in. Torres is set to play Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega, who was at the top of her game when she hung up her uniform to raise her twin daughters. For eight years life was great until COVID-19 changed her life. With her husband’s restaurant going under, Tommy has no choice but to re-enter the workforce to support her family. Though it breaks her heart to be apart from her little girls, Tommy will show the world that no matter how much time has passed, when she puts on that uniform, she’s still a boss.

Torres will join the current cast which includes Rob Lowe (‘The West Wing’), Ronen Rubinstein (‘Dead of Summer’), Jim Parrack (‘The Deuce’, ‘True Blood’), Sierra McClain (‘Mindhunter’), Natacha Karam (‘The Brave’), Brian Michael Smith (‘Queen Sugar’), Julian Works (‘American Crime’), and Rafael Silva.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ comes from creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, and is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision. The trio exec produce the drama with Minear serving as showrunner on the series.

9-1-1: Lone Star‘ Season 1 is currently airing Tuesdays at 9pm on Sky Witness.
