Fabled space-trading game Elite Dangerous, is getting closer to release their new, game-changing expansion, Odyssey, and yesterday released the first gameplay footage (“foot”age being somewhat appropriate!) of the new system in action!
For those of you unaware of ‘Elite Dangerous’, the core game was a modern update of the classic Acornsoft game ‘Elite’, which was originally released in 1984 on the BBC Micro, followed by the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and pretty much every platform since. Launching on 2014 on PC, ‘Elite Dangerous’ allows the player to take control of their own starship in a huge open galaxy of players online, trading and fighting to gain bigger and better ships until reaching the rank of “Elite”.
Over the years, Frontier has added various major expansions, including the ability to land on planets, teaming up in squadrons to fight aliens, and the addition of Fleet Carriers, giving players their own mobile base of operations. However, one major thing was always missing… All the action took place in your ship. They did add in some character customisation, so you could see what your avatar looked like, but you could never actually walk anywhere… which is where Odyssey comes in.
Elite Dangerous: Odyssey allows Commanders to explore distant worlds on foot for the very first time, taking on new missions and engaging in intense tactical combat, seamlessly merging with Elite Dangerous’ iconic cockpit experience players have come to know and love. Players will be able to customize their characters for ground operations with different specialized suits and gear options and meet with other Commanders in social hubs across the galaxy. These hubs will provide ideal locations to plan their next move, form alliances and acquire and upgrade new equipment.
The action takes on a new dimension in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey through multiple spheres of combat. Starships, ground vehicles and commanders collide during devastating air-to-ground firefights. Players will be able to choose from an array of weapons and gear to suit their own play style and try to gain a tactical advantage, but it will be up to them to choose between all-out guns-blazing action or taking a stealthier approach.
Coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, pre-order is available now for Windows PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store and FrontierStore.net. Prospective Commanders can now pre-order the Elite Dangerous: Odyssey expansion with an SRP of £29.99/$39.99/€34.99. Also available today is the Deluxe Alpha expansion pack, with an SRP of £39.99/$54.99/€46.99, including the Odyssey expansion, Alpha/Beta access and the official soundtrack. Both pre-order packs grant access to the exclusive Pioneer suit skin as a pre-order bonus.
