‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ Rose Leslie & Theo James Cast In HBO Series From Steven Moffat

Former ‘Game of Thrones’ star Rose Leslie is returning to HBO, alongside ‘Sanditon’s Theo James as the duo are cast in the lead roles for The Time Traveler’s Wife, a new series from Steven Moffat.

Rose Leslie is set to play Claire Abshire, fiery, clever and unstoppable… and for most of her life, she’s had an amazing secret. Since she was 6, she has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future. Visits from the mysterious Henry are the bright spots in the tedium of her childhood. As the years pass, and she grows into a beautiful young woman, she starts to realize her friend is not imaginary — he’s a time traveller, visiting from the future. And he’s not just from any old future — he’s from her future. Clare has a literal date with destiny. One day she’s going to meet a young man called Henry DeTamble — whom she’ll know very well but who won’t recognize her at all — and she will become the time traveller’s wife.

Theo James plays the aforementioned Henry DeTamble, who has been a time traveller since he was 8. It’s not a superpower, it’s a condition which he can’t help. Sometimes, when Henry is stressed or worried (and sometimes for no reason at all) he loses his grip on the current moment and falls naked into the past or the future. One minute he’s making breakfast, the next he’s naked at a hoedown in 1973. He can be stuck there for minutes or months, he never knows. His life is a rollercoaster of constant danger and white-knuckle survival. Until one day he meets a beautiful redhead in the library where he works. Her name is Clare Abshire and though he’s never seen her before, she claims to have known him all her life. Finally, his curse has given him something good, and Clare and Henry are about to have the time of their lives.

Leslie is best known for her roles as Ygritte (“you know nothing Jon Snow”) in ‘Game of Thrones’, Maia Rindell in ‘The Good Fight’, and Gwen Dawson in ‘Downton Abbey’. James starred as Tobias “Four” Eaton in ‘The Divergent Series’ film trilogy, Sidney Parker in ‘Sanditon’, and has voiced characters in ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’, and ‘Castlevania’.

The series comes from Steven Moffat, who is, of course, no stranger to time travel, having previously been showrunner on ‘Doctor Who’. He’s also co-creator of ‘Sherlock’ and ‘Dracula’ with Mark Gatiss, and also created the wonderful sitcom ‘Coupling’. Moffat, Sue Vertue and Brian Minchin exec produce through their Hartswood Films company who are producing the series alongside Warner Bros. Television, who own the screen rights to the original Audrey Niffenegger novel.

The Time Traveler’s Wife was originally commissioned way back in 2018 with a straight-to-series order. No news on exactly when it will land, but it is said to be a “priority” for HBO. The drama should air on Sky Atlantic in the UK under their overall deal with HBO.
