‘American Gods’ “Definitely Not Dead” According To Neil Gaiman

Some possible good news for fans of American Gods according to Neil Gaiman. Whilst Starz may have opted to cancel the series, the author and exec producer has said on social media that the show is “definitely not dead”.

Based on Gaiman’s novel ‘American Gods’ is the epic story of an inevitable war building between the Old Gods of mythology and our New Gods of technology. Ricky Whittle stars as ex-con Shadow Moon, a man pulled into the service of the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, played by Ian McShane (‘Deadwood’, ‘John Wick’) – only to discover that not only is his charismatic but un-trustable boss actually the Norse All-Father god Odin, he’s also Shadow’s father.

“It’s definitely not dead,” said Gaiman, replying to a comment on Twitter last night. “I’m grateful to the team at @Starz for the American Gods journey so far. Fremantle (who make AG) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now we’re all just waiting to see which way forward is best, and who it’ll be with.”

At the time of the cancellation, there were some whispers of potentially finishing off the story with either a final limited series or a movie. This is often the case when a show is cancelled with a story left to tell, but it’s rare for it to actually go anywhere. However, this statement from Gaiman seems pretty adamant that there is some sort of path forward. One possibility would be for Amazon, who aired the series internationally, to step in and fund it. Another would be for Fremantle to go down the (potentially more financially risky) route of making the show or film out of their own pocket without a broadcaster, then selling it to the highest bidder. We’ll have to wait and see what emerges.

Gaiman himself is currently keeping busy with an adaptation of his comic book ‘The Sandman’ for Netflix, which is set to star Tom Sturridge in the lead role, alongside Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry & Sanjeev Bhaskar.

The current 3 Seasons of ‘American Gods‘ can be found on Amazon Prime in the UK.
