FOX US Orders ‘The Cleaning Lady’ Starring Elodie Yung To Series
FOX has handed a series pick up to ‘The Cleaning Lady‘, a new mob drama starring ‘Daredevil’s Elodie Yung the US broadcaster has announced.
Based upon an Argentine series, the pilot stars Élodie Yung (‘Daredevil’s Elektra) as Reyna, a whip-smart Cambodian doctor who was working in a top medical centre in Manila, Philippines, where she met her Filipino husband Marco Salonga. After their son was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening immunodeficiency disorder, Reyna comes to the U.S. for medical treatment to save their ailing son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, Reyna refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes an on-call “cleaning lady” for the mob.
Willing to do anything to save her son, Reyna walks the tightrope of morality, breaking the law for all the right reasons — and eventually forges her own path in the criminal underworld as she starts playing the game by her own rules… All whilst keeping secrets from her undocumented Filipina sister-in-law Fiona Salonga (Martha Millan – ‘The OA’, ‘As the World Turns‘) and dodging the FBI. The series also stars Adan Canto (‘Designated Survivor’, ‘Second Chance’) along with Sebastien & Valentino LaSalle, twins who share the role of Reyna’s son, Luca.
FOX has given the drama a ten-episode order, which is written by Miranda Kwok (‘The 100’, ‘Spartacus’), with Melissa Carter (‘Stargirl’) set as showrunner. Kwok and Carter serve as exec producers alongside Shay Mitchell (Amore & Vita Productions, Inc.), Rose Marie Vega and Paola Suarez. Michael Offer (‘Homeland’, ‘The Punisher’, ‘Longmire’) directed and EPed the pilot.
As we head into Upfront season, this is the fifth pick up so far from FOX alongside ballet-themed dramedy ‘The Big Leap’, Paul Feig’s US remake of British comedy ‘This Country’, country music drama ‘Monarch’, and ‘Our Kind of People’, which comes Karin Gist (‘Star’, ‘Mixed-ish’) and Lee Daniels (‘Empire’, ‘Star’). More pickups are expected over the next few weeks… along with more renewals and cancellations…
‘The Cleaning Lady‘ is expected to air in the 2021/2022 season (so “Fall/Winter”) on FOX in the USA. No idea if, when, or where it’ll land in the UK. Although we do have a FOX channel in the UK, it is owned by Disney, whereas FOX US is still owned by FOX Corp, so they are two entirely separate entities.
