Geektown BTS Podcast 44: Composer Fil Eisler Interview – ‘Thunder Force’

On this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast, I’m catching up with the wonderful and lovely friend of the show, composer Fil Eisler about his latest movie Thunder Force.

For those of you who haven’t heard the six other times we’ve interviewed Fil, he is a muli-award-winning composer with projects ranging from big studio action pieces and comedies, to gritty independent films and hit television shows. He began his career as a touring musician, where he travelled, recorded and wrote with a multitude of artists, including Robbie Williams, with whom he has written a number of songs as well.  As a tv composer, he has been the man behind the music for shows such as ‘Empire’, ‘Revenge’, ‘UnREAL’, and ‘What/If’, along with recent Netflix series ‘Biohackers’ and ‘Outer Banks’, both of which are due to return with 2nd Seasons, and the new Disney+ series ‘Big Shot’. On the film side, he has scored movies such as ‘The Titan’, ‘CHIPS’, Marti Noxon’s ‘To the Bone’, the documentaries ‘Newtown’ and ‘US Kids’, and a number of Melissa McCarthy/Ben Falcone films including ‘Life of the Party’, ‘Superintelligence’, and their latest, which is the No 1 streaming movie in the USA, ‘Thunder Force’.

‘Thunder Force’ stars Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer as two childhood best friends who are reunite as an unlikely crime-fighting superhero duo when one invents a formula that gives ordinary people superpowers. It is an outrageously fun film, and Fil has created an outrageously kick-ass soundtrack to go with it.

Teaming up with heavy metal legends such as Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Mr Bungle), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), alongside heavy metal cellist, Tina Guo, Fil put together something of a metal supergroup to create a sound they have been referring to as “Orchestral Metal”. It is one of my favourite things Fil has created so far, and if you check out his Instagram feed, you’ll see he had an outrageously fun time doing it too. I should also point out, this was all put together in the logistical nightmare of a global pandemic…

It’s always a pleasure to chat with Fil about his work, but it was especially interesting this time around as he discusses working with some of his childhood (and adulthood) heroes, collaborating again with the lovely Melissa McCarthy & Ben Falcone, and the issues with trying to record an orchestral soundtrack in the middle of a pandemic.
