‘Loki’ Renewed For Season 2 At Disney+

Those pesky Gods Of Mischief are hard to get rid of, so as Loki Season 1 comes to an end today, Disney+ confirms the series will return for Season 2.

Season 1 followed Loki as he steps out of his brother’s shadow in a new series that takes place after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. For those of you a little confused by that (given the… erm… “state”… Loki was left in during his MCU run), this is following that alt-version we saw absconding with the Tesseract in ‘Endgame’.

So, this is a “Loki variant” from “The Avengers” movie era, meaning he begins as way more “God of Mischief” than the main-timeline version who softened a bit after the events of the later ‘Thor’ movies. This version finds himself a fish-out-of-water when he lands in a world of trouble with the bureaucratic TVA (Time Variance Authority)…

Whilst we don’t know exactly where the 2nd Season will go in terms of plot, the Season 1 finale, does set things up rather nicely…

WARNING! SPOILERS for the Loki Season 1 finale below:

In the finale, which was released today, Loki and… Loki, aka Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), had both made it past the monster Alioth to reach the Citadel at the End of Time. Once inside, they encounter a man described as “He Who Remains”. For those of you who know your Marvel characters, you may have realised this is a variant of Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, who is next due to pop up in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’.

“He Who Remains” explains how he created the TVA after ending a multiversal war caused by his more evil variants. Its purpose was to stop any future multiversal wars by creating a singular timeline. He then offers them a choice – A. Kill him, and end the singular timeline, allowing free will, but also the multiverse to expand into chaos, most likely creating a new multiversal war… Or B. Replace him as his successors together in overseeing the timeline. Sylvie just wants him dead, and fights with Loki who wants her to consider the consequences. She pushes Loki through a portal landing him back at the TVA, and plunges a sword through “He Who Remains” heart… And the timeline begins to branch out exponentially…

Back at the TVA, Loki tries to warn Mobius about the threat from the expanding timelines and the threat from the evil “He Who Remains” variants. The only problem is, Mobius has no idea who Loki is… Looking around, Loki spots a statue of “He Who Remains” and realises he is in a different universe’s TVA…

This is an interesting development for the wider MCU, as it would appear that Sylvie’s actions have birthed the multiverse. As you are probably aware, a number of upcoming films in the MCU, notably ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ both seem to contain multiverse elements. This also ties to the upcoming next Disney+ Marvel series, the multiverse animated anthology What If…?which premieres Wednesday, 11th August 2021 on Disney+ worldwide.

The whole of ‘Loki‘ Season 1 can be watched right now on Disney+ worldwide.
