Victoria Cartagena has been cast a Renee Montoya in the third season of ‘Batwoman’ it has been announced. Interestingly, this is a character the actress is extremely familiar with…
Cartagena joins the drama as a new series regular. According to Deadline, who broke the news, this version of Renee Montoya is a former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department. She now runs the “freaks division,” which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.
What makes this casting rather intriguing is the fact that Victoria Cartagena has already played Montoya, over on the FOX drama ‘Gotham’. This will be a different version of the character, as the two universes are not directly connected, but as we know from the ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’ event, the whole of the DC on film and tv sits within a multiverse, so it does come as a nice little nod to that. More recently, Cartagena starred in the FOX drama ‘Almost Family’ and popped up on ‘Manifest’, and the Netflix series ‘YOU’, which is produced by Arrowverse Overlord, Greg Berlanti.
For those of you who know Renee Montoya from the comic books, you’ll also know she has an alter-ego as superhero The Question, although whether that gets introduced in the series remains to be seen. She also had a relationship with Kate Kane.
‘Batwoman’ Season 2, which is currently running on E4 in the UK, saw Javicia Leslie step into the cowl as a new character, Ryan Wilder. She joined the existing cast of Dougray Scott (Jacob Kane), Camrus Johnson (Luke), Nicole Kang (Mary), Meagan Tandy (Sophie) and Rachel Skarsten (Alice).
‘Batwoman‘ Season 2 is currently airing Sunday nights.., ish… at some point on E4 when they pick a random time slot for it… in the UK.
