US network FX has released the first trailer for ‘Y: The Last Man‘, an adaptation based on DC Comics/Vertigo’s acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.
‘Y: The Last Man’ traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.
As the planet descends into a post-apocalyptic nightmare, Yorick, accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he’s the last man on earth.
The drama stars Ben Schnetzer (‘Happy Town’, ‘Pride’) as Yorick Brown, the titular last man; Amber Tamblyn (‘Two and a Half Men’, ‘The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret’) as Kimberly Cunningham; Diane Lane (‘Man of Steel’) as Jennifer Brown, Yorick’s mother; Ashley Romans (‘NOS4A2’) as Agent 355; Diana Bang (‘Resident Alien’, ‘The Order’) as Allison Mann; Elliot Fletcher (‘Shameless’, ‘The Fosters’) as Sam Jordan; Juliana Canfield (‘Succession’) as Beth Deville; Marin Ireland (‘The Umbrella Academy’, ‘Sneaky Pete’) as Nora Brady; And Olivia Thirlby (‘The L Word: Generation Q’, ‘Goliath’) as Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister.
It’s been a bit of a rocky road to screen for the series, having had cast changes, switches in showrunners, and shutdowns in filming due to COVID. Thankfully it is now shot, and due to land in the USA on Monday, September 13, 2021, via FX On Hulu. The series will premiere at some point after that internationally on Disney+ as a STAR Original series, but we don’t know exactly when yet. If you’re wondering why Disney doesn’t just air it the next day, that seems to be to stop people in the USA from booting up a VPN to access the international version of Disney+ to access STAR, thereby negating the need for them to pay for Hulu…
Along with (obviously) having a mainly female cast, the series also is heavily female-led behind the scenes. The first two episodes of the drama are written by showrunner Eliza Clark (‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘Extant’) and directed by Louise Friedberg (‘Borgen’, ‘The Right Stuff’). All further episodes of season one are being directed by women and the production has a significant number of female department heads. FX Productions produce the series.
