‘Futurama’ Returns (Again) As Hulu Orders New Season To Premiere In 2023

Good news everyone! Futurama, the series which just won’t seem to stay cancelled, has been revived once again, as Hulu announce they have ordered 20 new episodes!

The cult animated sci-fi comedy follows Fry, a young Everyman, who finds himself accidentally transported 1,000 years in the future. Just like right now, life in the future is a complex mix of the wonderful and horrible, where things are still laughable no matter how wild and crazy they get. And against a backdrop of pesky aliens, exasperating robots and malfunctioning gadgets, people still struggle with the same daily anxieties of life and love… and, of course, traffic is still a nightmare!

The series will see Billy West return to voice Fry/Zoidberg/Farnsworth/Brannigan, alongside Katey Sagal as Leela, Tress MacNeille as Carol “Mom”/Various, Maurice LaMarche as Kif, Lauren Tom as Amy Wong, Phil LaMarr as Hermes and David Herman as Scruffy/Various.

You’ll notice there is one name missing… Bender, voiced by John DiMaggio… According to Deadline, DiMaggio, who has travelled the world promoting the series since it has been off-air, was approached about reprising his infamous role, but he “felt the proposal was not competitive based on the success and name recognition of the original series.” 20th Television Animation are looking to recast prior to the first table read on Monday. They are, however, hopeful DiMaggio will change his mind.

‘Futurama’ has been through the mill when it comes to broadcast. FOX famously canned the series when it was mid-production on Season 4. It was later revived for a series of DVD movies in 2007 which were then chopped into episodes that aired on Comedy Central. That prompted the network to order new seasons in 2010, where it ran before being cancelled again in 2013.

“When presented with the opportunity to bring fans and viewers new episodes of Futurama, we couldn’t wait to dive in,” commented Craig Erwich, President, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment. “This iconic series helped blaze the trail for the success of adult animation since its initial launch and we look forward to Matt & David continuing to pave the way and further establishing Hulu as the premiere destination for fans of the genre.”

‘Futurama’ is created by Matt Groening, then developed by Groening and David X. Cohen. It is produced 20th Television Animation a part of Disney Television Studios, with Rough Draft Studios, Inc. contributing the animation.

Futurama‘ will return to Hulu in the USA and will air on Disney+ in the UK in 2023. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
