‘The Last Kingdom’ Season 5 Gets Trailer & March Premiere On Netflix

The Last Kingdom is set to return for its last season (although it does also have a film coming!), as Netflix releases a trailer and March premiere date for Season 5 of their adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories novels.

‘The Last Kingdom’ follows young warrior and outsider, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), on a fierce mission to reclaim his birthright. The series combines real historical figures and events with fictional characters before and after the reign of Alfred the Great, who as King of Wessex fought off a Viking invasion.

Based on books nine and ten – The Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer – the fifth season will see Uhtred realise his destiny is more than just Bebbanburg: it is tied to the future of England itself. Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.

Season five adds a few new faces to the cast, with Patrick Robinson (‘Mount Pleasant’, ‘Casualty’) taking the role of Father Benedict, a holy man with a troubled past; Sonya Cassidy (‘Humans’, ‘Lodge 49’) playing Eadgifu, a smart and openhearted Saxon who arrives in Winchester; and young actor Harry Gilby (‘Tolkien’, ‘Casualty’) as Aethelstan, a young man trained by Uhtred to follow in his footsteps.

‘The Last Kingdom’ season five will be written by Martha Hillier and sees star Dreymon makes his directorial debut on an episode. Andy Hay (‘Lucky Man’), Paul Wilmshurst (‘Strike Back’), Anthony Philipson (‘Our Girl’), and Jon East (‘Pennyworth’) also direct. Gareth Neame, Nigel Marchant and Jessica Pope exec produce. The series is produced by Carnival Films and distributed by NBCUniversal Global Distribution.

Following season five, the Saxon drama will return for one last hurrah, with the film ‘Seven Kings Must Die’, in which Alexander Dreymon reprises his lead role as Uhtred. Many of the series’ much-loved characters will be returning, along with the introduction of several new faces.

The Last Kingdom‘ Season 5 premieres Wednesday, 9th March 2022 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
