Disney+ & STAR Originals March Highlights

West Side Story (Film) – 2nd March 2022

Directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno – one of only three artists to be honoured with Academy, Emmy, GRAMMY®, Tony and Peabody Awards – also serves as one of the film’s executive producers. The film has been nominated in the Oscars this year for Best Picture, Best Director, Actress in a Supporting Role (Ariana Debose), Costume Design, Sound, Cinematography, and Production Design

The Dropout – 3rd March 2022

Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception. From Executive Producer Elizabeth Meriwether, The Dropout is the story of Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) and Theranos, an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world’s youngest self-made billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? The Dropout stars Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes and Naveen Andrews as Sunny Balwani. The limited series also includes guest stars Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Stephen Fry, Michel Gill, LisaGay Hamilton, William H. Macy, Elizabeth Marvel, Laurie Metcalf, Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Sam Waterson, Michaela Watkins and more.

Fresh (Film) – 4th March 2022

Fresh follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and – given her frustration with dating apps – takes a chance and gives him her number. After their first date, Noa is smitten and accepts Steve’s invitation to a romantic weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

The Great North, Season 2 – 7th March 2022

Follow the Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as a single dad, Beef, does his best to keep his weird bunch of kids close – especially his only daughter, Judy, whose artistic dreams lead her away from the family fishing boat and into the glamorous world of the local mall. Rounding out the family are Judy’s older brother, Wolf, and his fiancé, Honeybee, her middle brother, Ham, and ten-year-old-going-on-fifty little brother, Moon. While their mother is not in the picture, Judy seeks guidance from her new boss, Alyson, and her imaginary friend, Alanis Morissette, who appears to her in the northern lights.

Turning Red (Film) – 11th March 2022

Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter – an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! The film is directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao) and produced by Lindsey Collins.

Nightmare Alley (Film) – 16th March 2022

In Nightmare Alley, an ambitious carny (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is. The movie is directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, and David Strathairn. The film has been Oscar-nominated this year for Best Picture, Cinematography, Production Design, and Costume Design.

Cheaper by the Dozen (Film) – 18th March 2022

A reimagining of the 2003 hit family comedy about the raucous exploits of a blended family of 12, the Bakers. Gabrielle Union and Zach Braff star as Zoey and Paul, a husband and wife navigating a hectic home life while simultaneously managing their family business: Baker’s Breakfast, a local eatery that serves nothing but breakfast (and Paul’s to-die-for sweet and savoury sauce). With expansion plans for the restaurant in the works, Paul decides to move the family to a much bigger house to an upscale suburb, but the move across town and its effect on the kids is more stressful than Paul and Zoey anticipated. With the fate of their loving, tight-knit family in jeopardy, it is up to Paul to find a life that is the perfect size for all their dreams.

The Eyes Of Tammy Faye (Film) – 23rd March 2022

The Eyes Of Tammy Faye is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. In the 1970s and 80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. Tammy Faye was legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire. The film has been Oscar-nominated this year for Actress in a Leading Role (Jessica Chastain), along with Makeup and Hairstyling.

Parallels – 23rd March 2022

Four childhood friends, Sam, Bilal, Romane and Victor, are leading a calm existence in a peaceful village in the mountains when a mysterious event turns their worlds upside down. In a split second, the universe discards its rules and reshuffles everything: the present, the future and multiverses merge, separating the teens and sending them into parallel worlds, in different time frames. They set about trying to fathom out what happened and strive to find each other and turn the clocks back, to return to the world they used to live in. Facing their potential destinies will be the opportunity to grow up and to see things a new way, as their parents will or as Lieutenant Retz will, having to deal for the first time with an investigation challenging his scientific mind.

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild – 25th March 2022

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild continues the hilarious escapades of everyone’s favourite prehistoric mammals. Desperate for some distance from their older sister Ellie, the thrill-seeking possum brothers Crash and Eddie set out to find a place of their own, but quickly find themselves trapped in a massive cave underground. They are rescued by the one-eyed, adventure-loving, dinosaur-hunting weasel, Buck Wild, and together they must face the unruly dinosaurs who inhabit the Lost World.

Moon Knight – 30th March 2022

The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt. Moon Knight stars Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy.

Alongside the various Originals and UK exclusives, there are, of course, more tv boxsets and films being added to the streaming service for you to rewatch, or see for the first time.

Or if mermaids are your thing, all three seasons of Siren will drop onto the series from 30th March.

On the film side, ‘X-Men: First Class’ joins the lineup from 3rd March, or if you want more real-world drama, you can watch ‘The King’s Speech’ on the same date. For fans of the ‘Alien’ franchise, six of the films land on the service on the 18th March. Or if you’re into squeaky singing rodents, ‘Alvin And The Chipmunks’ lands 23rd March, with “The Squeakquel” dropping on 30th March.
