‘God of War’: Amazon Looking To Develop TV Series Adaptation

TV series of triple-A video game titles are all the rage at the moment, and Amazon is looking to bag themselves another one, as reports land that they are in talks to develop ‘God of War’ into a live-action show.

Created by David Jaffe and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, the ‘God of War’ franchise has been around since 2005. However, it was the 2018 Playstation 4 release that really propelled the series into the stratosphere. The original series had been based around Greek mythology, but this new version of the action-adventure game switched that to be loosely inspired by Norse mythology, with the majority of it set in ancient Scandinavia in the realm of Midgard. The story follows Kratos (voiced by ‘Stargate: SG1’s Christopher Judge), who, with his vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive… and teach his son, Atreus (Sunny Suljic), to do the same.

According to Deadline, who broke the news, the potential series comes from ‘The Expanse’ creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, alongside ‘The Wheel of Time’ executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions would produce the drama.

2018’s ‘God of War’, which was the eighth game overall in the franchise, gathered an impressive array of awards on release, including British Academy Games Awards for Best Game, Music and Narrative, Game of the Year Awards from Game Developers Choice, SXSW, and The Game Awards, along with the Golden Joystick for PlayStation Game of the Year, Best Audio Design, Video Design, and Storytelling. The game had sold over 19.5 million copies as of August 2021.

If this series does go into development, it joins an ever-growing list of video games to tv shows currently underway. Amazon themselves are currently working on an adaptation of Fallout from ‘Westworld’s Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy. There is also the Halo series at Paramount+, The Last of Us’ series at HBO, various Resident Evil’ live-action and animated series at Netflix, and of course, The Witcher (which is technically based on the books, but also the games). Even Peacock is getting in on the act, with an adaptation of Twisted Metal’ starring Anthony Mackie.

The potential ‘God of War’ tv series is not yet a done deal, so may not come to fruition, but we’ll let you know if and when we hear more.
