CBS also has the axe out tonight, as they cancel three shows – Magnum PI, Good Sam and ‘How We Roll’, although only ‘Magnum’ aired in the UK.

‘Magnum P.I.’ is a modern take on the classic series centring on Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez – ‘Scandal’, ‘Suicide Squad’), a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. A charming rogue, an American hero and a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business.

Alongside Hernandez, the series stars Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins, Zachary Knighton as Orville “Rick” Wright, Stephen Hill as Theodore “T.C.” Calvin, Amy Hill as Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, and Tim Kang as HPD Detective Gordon Katsumoto.

Whilst both ‘Good Sam’ and ‘How We Roll’ had been struggling in the ratings, so seemed likely for the chopping block, ‘Magnum’s numbers were actually pretty good. Unfortunately, Universal Television, not CBS, are the lead studio for the drama, and the two sides could not reach an agreement this time around over the license fee, which led to it getting the axe. CBS has already handed over sacks of cash to Universal this month, giving multi-season renewals to the ‘FBI’ franchise and ‘The Equalizer’, which are also made by Universal TV. It seems they had reached their limit.

Magnum PI‘ aired on Sky Max in the UK.
