NBC Renews ‘Young Rock’ & 2 Others, Cancels ‘Mr. Mayor’ & 2 Others

And so, the annual TV Bloodbath begins in earnest, as NBC saves three shows, but also puts the axe in the head of three, having apparently been taking lessons from Thanos about “balance in all things…”

The shows that live to fight another day are Young Rock, which is handed a 3rd Season, alongside American Auto‘ and Grand Crew. Those not returning from the battlefield are Mr. Mayor, The Endgame and Kenan. Out of the six shows, only ‘Young Rock’ and ‘Mr. Mayor‘ currently air in the UK.

‘Young Rock’, which returns to Sky for Season 2 this June, delves back into Dwayne Johnson’s life, continuing the storylines from Season 1 while also introducing new chapters we haven’t yet seen. As Dwayne and his loving, resilient family face new challenges and meet new wild characters of professional wrestling, Dwayne contemplates embracing the grind of professional wrestling himself. The show will explore the crazy rollercoaster that has shaped Dwayne into the man he is today and the larger-than-life people he’s met along the way.

Whilst the number for ‘Young Rock’ haven’t been that great, it is NBC’s #1 primetime comedy in the 18-49 demo, which seems like it saved the comedy from the chopping block… Plus, I mean… Would you want to be the network exec who is going to tell The Rock you’ve cancelled his show?

‘Mr. Mayor’, which is set to return for its 2nd, and now final, season later this month to Sky, follows a retired businessman (Ted Danson) who runs for mayor of Los Angeles to prove he’s “still got it.” Once he wins, he has to figure out what he stands for, gain the respect of his biggest critic (Holly Hunter) and connect with his teenage daughter, all while trying to get anything right for America’s second weirdest city.

NBC had high hopes for ‘Mr. Mayor’, given it came from the team behind ’30 Rock’. Unfortunately, it wasn’t getting anywhere near the numbers it needed, and those numbers halved again in season two, so NBC finally decided to let it go.

Young Rock‘ and ‘Mr. Mayor‘ both air on Sky Comedy in the UK.
