Starz Confirm ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Prequel Is Officially In Development

After news leaked a while ago about a possible prequel series to the hugely popular ‘Outlander’, Starz has officially confirmed ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ is in development at the network.

The potential new series, which has now opened up a writers room to break scripts, comes from current showrunner & EP Matthew B. Roberts who would return to those roles for the prequel. Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis would also return as exec producers via their Tall Ship Productions company, with Sony Pictures Television once again as the studio.

The plotline for the prequel would centres on Ellen MacKenzie, eldest of the children of Jacob Ruadh MacKenzie, chief of Clan MacKenzie, wife of Brian Fraser, the mother and father to a certain Jamie Fraser. Book author, Diana Gabaldon, had previously announced she was working on a prequel novel using the same plot, so there will presumably be some synergy between the two projects.

“Outlander is a riveting show that from season to season has captured the hearts of its fans around the world,” commented Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming at Starz. “We are excited to peel back the layers of this vibrant world to bring our audience the origin of where it all began. Matthew, Maril, and Ronald will continue to bring their excellent vision and creativity to this new iteration, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.”

The main ‘Outlander’ series, which is currently in production on Season 7, sees Charles Vandervaart (‘Murdoch Mysteries’, ‘Lost In Space’) join the cast as William, the grown-up secret son of Jamie Fraser. William arrives in Wilmington full of patriotic zeal and enthusiasm to join the British Army and help put an end to the escalating tensions in the American Colonies… which is a little awkward for his biological father! He will join the returning cast of Caitríona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin and John Bell.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ is classed as “in development” so still might not make it to series, but we’ll let you know when we hear more. The main ‘Outlander‘ show can now be found on STARZ in the USA and STARZPLAY in the UK.
