‘God Of War’: Prime Video Gives Series Order To Video Game Adaptation

Back in March we got word that Amazon was looking at an adaption of the hugely popular video game God Of War. Now it has been announced that the adaption has been picked up for a series.

The drama follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak – his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.

The adaptation is being written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (‘Iron Man’, ‘Children of Men’) who previously developed ‘The Expanse’ for tv, based on the James S. A. Corey novels. Rafe Judkins (‘The Wheel of Time’) serves as showrunner. The series will be co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios in association with PlayStation Productions.

“The God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” commented Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios. “We are honoured to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.”

2018’s ‘God of War’, which was the eighth game overall in the franchise, gathered an impressive array of awards on release, including British Academy Games Awards for Best Game, Music and Narrative, Game of the Year Awards from Game Developers Choice, SXSW, and The Game Awards, along with the Golden Joystick for PlayStation Game of the Year, Best Audio Design, Video Design, and Storytelling. The game had sold over 23 million copies as of November 2022. The follow-up, ‘God of War Ragnarok’, was released in November 2022 and recently swept the boards at The Game Awards picking up trophies for Best Narrative, Score, Audio Design, and Action/Adventure, along with a Best Performance award for Christopher Judge who plays Kratos.

“God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions.

This adaptation joins an ever-growing list of video games to tv shows currently on-air or underway. Amazon themselves are currently working on an adaptation of Fallout from ‘Westworld’s Jonathan Nolan & Lisa Joy. There is also the Halo series at Paramount+, The Last of Us’ series at HBO, various Resident Evil’ live-action and animated series at Netflix, and of course, The Witcher (which is technically based on the books, but also the games). Even Peacock is getting in on the act, with an adaptation of Twisted Metal’ starring Anthony Mackie.

God Of War‘ does not have a premiere date or cast yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear more. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
