Final Season Of ‘The Flash’ Brings Back Some Familiar Faces

As The Flash plans his return for one (shortened) final season, effectively closing down the Arrowverse, the series has announced a number of familiar faces will be returning to give him a send-off… And no, before anyone asks, we don’t know exactly when it will air on Sky in the UK…

The series stars Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, aka The Flash, the fastest man alive, as he spends his time, aided by his dedicated “Team Flash”, saving Central City from various metahuman threats and potentially catastrophic events. The series also stars Candace Patton as Iris West-Allen, Danielle Panabaker as Caitlin Snow, Danielle Nicolet as Cecile Horton, Kayla Compton as Allegra Garcia, Brandon McKnight as Chester P. Runk and Jesse L. Martin as Detective Joe West.

Joining that cast for a guest spot in the final season will be Stephen Amell, reprising his role as Oliver Queen. “As soon as our final season was announced, we knew we wanted Stephen to come back and reprise his iconic role as Oliver Queen,” commented showrunner Eric Wallace. “After all, it was Oliver who originally launched Barry Allen on his heroic path. That’s why everyone on Team Flash felt so strongly that it was important to create a full-circle moment with Oliver’s return in the final season of The Flash.”

Now, if you remember the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ event, Ollie died, although we did see him reunite with Felicity in a pocket dimension afterlife created by the Monitor. So whether this return is a flashback, some timey-wimey stuff, or something more supernatural remains to be seen. He will show up in episode 909, so we’ll see what happens then.

The final season will also see the return of Wally West/Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale), John Diggle/Spartan (David Ramsey) and Dr. Ramsey Rosso/Bloodwork (Sendhil Ramamurthy).

“As one of the legacy Arrowverse characters who helped start it all, John Diggle holds a special place in our hearts, as well as the fans’,” adds Wallace. “Plus, the commanding presence and commitment to excellence actor/director David Ramsey brings to the screen each and every time is truly inspiring. So, of course, it was a no-brainer to have Diggle join Team Flash in our final season! So, get ready for a very emotional reunion as John Diggle aka Spartan helps protect Central City alongside Team Flash one, last time.” He continues, “Kid Flash isn’t just another speedster – he’s a beloved part of our Team Flash family. So as soon as we knew he was coming back, we set out to create a special and heartfelt story for his return. The result is a brilliant performance from Keiynan that showcases a side of Wally West you’ve never seen before.”

Finally, on the return of Sendhil Ramamurthy, it seems Bloodwork will play a major part in the final villain arc. “Ever since Sendhil turned in such a brilliantly haunting and unforgettable performance as the tortured Ramsey Rosso in Season 6, we’ve been looking for a way to bring him back,” continued Wallace. “We also knew we wanted to have Ramsey play a part in Flash’s final race. Fortunately, everything came together and now the villainous Bloodwork’s return will set into motion one of the Flash’s wildest and most emotional adventures yet.”

The ending of ‘The Flash’ marks the defacto end of the Arrowverse on The CW. Whilst ‘Superman & Lois’ is the last CW/DC show standing, it takes place on an alternate Earth so is not technically part of it. With James Gunn and Peter Safran now helming the unified DC Studios across TV and film, it’s going to be an interesting time ahead for DC fans.

Based on the characters from DC, ‘The Flash’ comes from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers are Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, alongside Eric Wallace.

The Flash‘ Season 9 premieres February 08, 2023, on The CW in the USA. It will air on Sky Max in the UK at some point after that, but we don’t yet have an exact premiere date. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
