‘Unstable’: Trailer Lands For Rob Lowe & John Owen Lowe Comedy, Premiering March On Netflix

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has released the trailer for Unstable, a brand new comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, co-created and executive produced by both Lowes and ‘Santa Clarita Diet’s Victor Fresco.

Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) is a universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place. He’s also in an emotional free-fall. His son Jackson Dragon (John Owen Lowe) is… none of those things. Can Jackson save Ellis and his company and salvage their estranged relationship while also doing what may actually be impossible: escaping the shadow of his larger-than-life father?

Joining “the Lowes” on the series are Sian Clifford (‘His Dark Materials’, ‘Fleabag’) as Anna Bennet, the CFO who has been (barely) kept Dragon on the rails during Ellis’ spiral; Aaron Branch (‘Millennials’) as Malcolm, a childhood friend of Jackson’s who used to be Ellis’ assistant but has recently been promoted to project manager; Rachel Marsh (‘Before We Go’) as Luna Castillo, a shy/”weird” biotech engineer who works in one of the labs with her friend and research partner, Ruby, played by Emma Ferreira (‘Transplant’), who is outgoing, accessible, and fun… the opposite of Luna.

In something akin to art imitating life, the comedy is inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often humorously trolls his dad. Their posts often go viral and have been extensively covered in the media.

The series is co-created by the Lowes, alongside Victor Fresco, who is a television writer, showrunner, and show creator. He has created seven television series, including the Netflix show ‘Santa Clarita Diet’, and is credited with creating the critically-acclaimed series ‘Better Off Ted’ and ‘Andy Richter Controls the Universe’, for which he was nominated for a writing Emmy. Fresco wrote for three years on NBC’s ‘My Name is Earl’, and was nominated for an Emmy for his work on that show, as well as for ‘Mad About You’.

Unstable‘ Season 1 premieres Thursday, 30th March 2023 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
