NBC Orders ‘St. Denis Medical’ Comedy From ‘Superstore’ Team. Cancels ‘Young Rock’ & ‘Grand Crew’

NBC is shuffling its comedy lineup, as it cancels two series which were left lingering post-Bloodbath, and orders St. Denis Medical, a new medical comedy from the people behind ‘Superstore’.

‘St. Denis Medical’ is a mockumentary set in an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients… while maintaining their own sanity.

The cast includes ‘The Goldbergs’ Wendi McLendon-Covey as Joyce, executive director and former oncological surgeon at St. Denis, who has big dreams for the future of the hospital, though those dreams are not currently being realized. The series also stars Allison Tolman (‘Fargo’, ‘Why Women Kill’) as Alex, the supervising nurse in St. Denis’ Emergency Department who is dedicated to providing excellent care to her patients, often sacrificing her personal life to maintain her high standards.

Other cast includes David Alan Grier (‘Joe Pickett’, ‘The Patient’) as Ron, a defeated divorcee and Emergency Department doctor who has accepted that the thrill is gone; Josh Lawson (‘Superstore’, ‘House of Lies’) as Bruce, a trauma surgeon working primarily in the Emergency Department, who is very talented… he knows it and wants everyone else to know it; Kahyun Kim (‘Cocaine Bear’, ‘American Gods’) as Serena, an Emergency Department nurse who leans toward homoeopathy and is Alex’s “work wife”; And Mekki Leeper (‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’, ‘Jury Duty’) as Matt, a well-meaning Emergency Department nurse whom we meet on his first day as a Registered Nurse… it’s not going well!

The series is created by ‘Superstore’ and ‘American Auto’ creator Justin Spitzer alongside Eric Ledgin, who served as a writer and exec producer on both shows. The duo write and exec produce the series, with Simon Heuer of Spitzer Holding Company, who produces the series, also serving as EP. Universal Television serves as the studio.

Of course, for NBC to bring in new shows, it means losing some older ones, and the two comedies which have been culled to make space are Dwayne Johnson’s Young Rockwhich aired for three seasons on Sky Comedy in the UK, and the Echo Kellum/Nicole Byer fronted sitcom Grand Crew after two seasons, which never made it to our shores. NBC has yet to make a decision on Justin Spitzer’s other ongoing comedy series, American Auto, but the fact they have picked up ‘St. Denis Medical’ could be a positive sign that it will return.

St. Denis Medical‘ will air on NBC in the USA, but does not yet have a UK broadcaster. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
