Adult Swim Reveals Voice Actors For ‘Rick and Morty’ Season 7

Just before Rick and Morty returns tomorrow on UK TV for Season 7, Adult Swim has revealed the voice actors who will take over the titular roles moving forward… and they both do a brilliant job!

As you may or may not be aware, Justin Roiland, co-creator of the series and original voice of Rick and Morty was fired following allegations of problematic behaviour (it should also be pointed out that criminal charges against Roiland were dismissed due to insufficient evidence earlier this year, however, he is not returning to the show.) This meant they needed to find new voices for their leads. On Rolland’s other show, ‘Solar Opposites’, they opted to completely change the voice of Korvo (the character voiced by Rolland) and hired British actor Dan Stevens. However, with ‘Rick and Morty’, they went with “soundalikes” instead, and have hired Ian Cardoni to voice Rick, and Harry Belden to voice Morty.

Both Cardoni and Belden do not have a huge number of credits to their names when you look them up, and both were clearly hired for their excellent voice mimicry talents. And having seen the opening two episodes of the series, I can happily tell you, it’s pretty hard to spot the difference.

Cardoni has popped up in a few comedy shorts, and doing a Jack Sparrow impression on ‘WrestleMania’, but other than that, there isn’t a huge amount to his IMDb CV. However, he completely nails Rick, and it’s very hard to tell that it isn’t Roiland still doing the voice.

Belden’s CV is also pretty light, with his most high-profile roles being guest spots on ‘Chicago Med’ and ‘Proven Innocent’. His Morty is extremely good, although there are a few moments you can tell something is slightly different if you’re really listening for it. However, if you’ve been unaware of the behind-the-scenes drama on the show, I suspect you wouldn’t even notice, which is exactly what Adult Swim were going for.

‘Rick and Morty’ follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. Rick Sanchez is living with his daughter Beth’s family and constantly bringing her, his son-in-law Jerry, granddaughter Summer and grandson Morty into intergalactic escapades.

The opening episode of season seven, titled “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” features the return of Mr. Poopybutthole (as you’d rather expect!) who has been crashing with the Smiths after his life took a downturn. As Rick tries to help his old friend get back on his feet, things go wildly off the rails…

Rick and Morty‘ Season 7 premieres Tuesday, 17th October 2023 at 10pm on E4 and Channel 4 streaming in the UK.
