‘Cruel Summer’ & ‘Good Trouble’ Cancelled
US network Freeform has cancelled both ‘Cruel Summer‘ after two seasons & ‘Good Trouble‘ after five seasons, however, the latter will film additional scenes for a proper ending.
Spin-off series ‘Good Trouble’ followed ‘The Fosters’ characters Callie (Maia Mitchell – ‘The Fosters’, ‘The Lion Guard’) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez – ‘The Fosters’, ‘Secret Life of the American Teenager’) as they embarked on the next phase of their young adult lives in Los Angeles. However, it widened out over the seasons to follow a group of 20-something residents of Los Angeles’ The Coterie.
In this final season, the roommates face their toughest obstacles yet as they’re confronted with evolving relationship challenges and new career opportunities. Through highs and lows, romance and heartbreak, “The Coterie” crew will lean on each other while they navigate the next stage of adulthood.
The 5th Season stars Cierra Ramirez, Tommy Martinez, Emma Hunton, Sherry Cola, Zuri Adele, Josh Pence, Bryan Craig and Booboo Stewart. Maia Mitchell, who left the show at the end of Season 4, will return to guest star.
On the plus side, the series is due to return in January for the second part of Season 5 in the USA, and the show has been allowed to go back and film some additional scenes to give it a (somewhat) proper ending. The show premieres on Disney+ UK here and some seasons have also appeared on BBC iPlayer.
‘Cruel Summer’ was a teen mystery thriller anthology series. Season 1 followed two young women: Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt), the popular girl with a charmed life who one day goes missing, and Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia), the nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate’s disappearance. Season 2 followed three different timelines surrounding Y2K, exploring the twists and turns of an early friendship between Megan (Sadie Stanley), Isabella (Lexi Underwood) and Megan’s best friend Luke (Griffin Gluck), the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward.
As this was an anthology series, the plots were wrapped up each season, so the show can still be enjoyed without ending on a cliffhanger. The series came from studio Entertainment One (eOne) and was created by Bert V. Royal. It aired on Prime Video in the UK.
Both seasons of ‘Cruel Summer‘ can be found on Prime Video in the UK. ‘Good Trouble‘ Season 5, Part 2 returns to Freeform in the USA on January 2nd, 2024. It does not yet have a UK premiere date but will air on Disney+ UK.
