Next up, we’re sticking with the Geeky categories, and have the best new and returning fantasy series. There are fewer shows to choose from in these categories this year, but still some great series. From vampires and ghosts to angels and demons, here are the nominees and winners.
Best New Comicbook/Superhero Series
Nominees: American Born Chinese, Season 1 – Disney+; Extraordinary, Season 1 – Disney+; Gen V, Season 1 – Prime Video; My Adventures With Superman, Season 1 – Channel 4; Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Season 1 – Netflix; Secret Invasion, Season 1 – Disney+.
Bronze: Marvel’s Secret Invasion, Season 1 – Disney+.
Silver: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Season 1 – Netflix
Gold Winner: Gen V, Season 1 – Prime Video
Whilst Marvel does manage to sneak in a bronze this year, it’s ‘The Boys’ spin-off ‘Gen V’ which lands to the gold. Taking the same over-the-top style of the parent series, but moving things to a superpowered college campus was a great idea from Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg and Eric Kripke. Likeable characters, a good conspiracy, plus lots of blood and comic book violence. A really great first season.
Best Returning Comicbook/Superhero Series
Nominees: Heartstopper, Season 2 – Netflix; Invincible, Season 2 – Prime Video; Loki, Season 2 – Disney+; Sweet Tooth, Season 2 – Netflix; Titans, Season 4 – Netflix
Bronze: Sweet Tooth, Season 2 – Netflix
Silver: Heartstopper, Season 2 – Netflix
Gold Winner: Marvel’s Loki, Season 2 – Disney+
Whilst Netflix takes bronze and silver, it is Marvel/Disney who lands gold with ‘Loki’ Season 2. A fitting conclusion to the story which began in season one, but with the added wonderful presence of Ke Huy Quan in a pivotal role, alongside Tom Hiddleston returning as the title character. Hiddleston has implied he is done with the role, but we wouldn’t be shocked to see Loki pop back up at some point in the future.
