Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Fantasy Series 2023

by Dave Elliott

Next up, we’re sticking with the Geeky categories, and have the best new and returning fantasy series. There are fewer shows to choose from in these categories this year, but still some great series. From vampires and ghosts to angels and demons, here are the nominees and winners.

Best New Fantasy Series

Nominees: Interview With The Vampire, Season 1 – BBC; Lockwood & Co, Season 1 – Netflix; One Piece, Season 1 – Netflix; The Last of Us, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic; Wolf Pack, Season 1 – Paramount+

Bronze: Lockwood & Co, Season 1 – Netflix

Silver: Interview With The Vampire, Season 1 – BBC

Gold Winner: Last of Us, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic

Well, of course, the top spot goes, once again, to ‘The Last Of Us’, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin’s wonderful adaptation of the hugely popular video. Rather than repeating myself heaping praise onto this show, I’ll hand you over to Troy Baker (video above), the voice of Joel in the video game, who explains how the show came to be greenlit by HBO following a meeting between Mazin and Druckmann.

Also a shout out to the dedication of the ‘Lockwood & Co.’ fan groups who pushed Netflix’s tragically cancelled show into the bronze position. It was a wonderful series with so much potential, cut down way too soon by the algorithm overlords.

Best Returning Fantasy Series

Nominees: American Horror Story: Delicate, Season 12 – Disney+; Black Mirror, Season 6 – Netflix; Carnival Row, Season 2 – Amazon Prime; Good Omens, Season 2 – Prime Video; Outlander, Season 7 – LIONSGATE+

Bronze: American Horror Story: Delicate, Season 12 – Disney+

Silver: Good Omens, Season 2 – Prime Video

Gold Winner: Black Mirror, Season 6 – Netflix

It’s been off our screens for several years, but ‘Black Mirror’ returned with a bang, taking the gold, and making fun of its host streaming platform, Netflix, in a beautifully subversive opening episode. It then takes us to space, the Scottish countryside, and even branches off into full-on horror. A worthy new set of episodes.
