CBS Orders Procedural ‘Einstein’ Starring Matthew Gray Gubler & Harriet Dyer-Led Comedy ‘DMV’

by Dave Elliott

CBS has picked up two new shows (along with cancelling two more…) – The procedural dramedy Einstein starring Matthew Gray Gubler, and Harriet Dyer-led comedy DMV.

Einstein follows Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as the brilliant but directionless, great-grandson of Albert Einstein, who spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases. Rosa Salazar (Brand New Cherry Flavor, Wedding Season) also stars.

The series comes from Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk, the duo behind the much-loved ‘Monk’, and is an adaptation of a German series written by Martin Ritzenhoff und Matthias Dinter. It’s produced by CBS Studios, with Breckman as writer and Zisk directing. The duo exec produce alongside Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia and Laura Beetz (Seven One Studios International).

DMV is based on award-winning author Katherine Heiny’s short story, and is a single-camera workplace comedy set at the place everyone dreads going most: the DMV (that the Department of Motor Vehicles for those of you outside of the USA). Our quirky and lovable characters are making minimum wage, doing a thankless job where customers are annoyed before they even walk in the door. Good thing they have each other.

The comedy stars Harriet Dyer (The InBetween, Colin from Accounts), Tim Meadows (The Goldbergs, Schooled), Molly Kearney (Saturday Night Live, A League of Their Own), Alex Tarrant (NCIS: Hawai’i, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Tony Cavalero (The Righteous Gemstones, School of Rock), and Gigi Zumbado (Bridge and Tunnel, 9-1-1).

For those of you worried about what this means for Colin from Accounts, don’t panic! That has been renewed for a 3rd Season, and the schedule is being worked out so Harriet Dyer can do both shows, as they both come from CBS Studios.

Dana Klein (Friends, Fresh Off The Boat) is creator and writer on ‘DMV’, and exec produces alongside Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, and Robyn Meisinger.

The “bear pit” that is CBS means shows need to get cancelled for new things to air… The two things getting the axe are the Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr comedy Poppa’s House, and reality competition series ‘The Summit’, neither of which aired in the UK.

Understandably, as they’ve just been announced, neither ‘Einstein‘ nor ‘DMV‘ have UK broadcasters yet. Both shows will air on CBS in the USA. If you want to keep track of these or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get UK premiere dates.
