It probably shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Disney has opted to renew FX’s Emmy Award-winning football docuseries ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ for Season 5.
The series follows Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) as they navigate running the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. “Welcome to Wrexham” is a docuseries tracking the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class city in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars guide the future of their historic Club.
The fourth season, currently airing on Disney+ in the UK, continues the story of Rob and Ryan’s purchase in 2020 of the 5th-tier Red Dragons in the hopes of turning the Club into an underdog story the whole world could root for… and root they did! The world took notice, and the Club achieved back-to-back promotions to bring the Reds into the English Football League’s League One for the first time in 20 years. However, the question remained: could they do something no other club had ever achieved, and go back-to-back-to-back, landing them in The Championship?
Given the show goes out after the games have already been played, that question has been answered (although I won’t spoil it here, in case anyone has been avoiding looking at the Wrexham scores).
Also revealed today were new details about FX and Disney+ Latin America’s ‘Necaxa‘, a new docuseries from Eva Longoria in partnership with Welcome to Wrexham’s Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, the three of whom are all investors in Aguascalientes, Mexico-based Club Necaxa. The gripping new series chronicling a turbulent and transformational era at the storied Mexican football club and the steadfast supporters who never give up hope arrives this summer.
‘Welcome to Wrexham’ is executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Ker, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma, and Andy Thomas. “Welcome to Wrexham” is produced by More Better Productions, Maximum Effort Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment and Boardwalk Pictures.
‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ Season 4 is currently airing on Disney+ in the UK and on FX in the USA.
