Saddle up with ‘Renegade Nell‘, the action-packed historical fantasy from acclaimed writer Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Gentleman Jack), makes its free-to-air UK debut on ITVX from Sunday, 22nd June 2025, with all eight episodes available to stream.
Originally commissioned by Disney+ and released in March 2024, Renegade Nell was a bold and unconventional tale that mixed period drama with supernatural elements. Set in 1705, the story follows Nell Jackson, played by Louisa Harland (Derry Girls), a spirited young woman returning from war to her family home in Tottenham. Her plans for a peaceful life are shattered when she’s framed for murder by the spoiled and vindictive son of the local landowner, Thomas Blancheford. Forced to flee with her sisters, Roxy and George, Nell soon becomes an infamous highwaywoman, but her journey is just beginning.
What sets Renegade Nell apart from your typical period drama is the inclusion of Billy Blind, a mischievous sprite played by Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), who grants Nell superhuman strength. With his help, Nell sets off on a whirlwind journey across England, uncovering a sinister magical conspiracy against the Queen, led by the enigmatic and dangerous Earl of Poynton (Adrian Lester – Hustle, Trigger Point).

Despite critical acclaim and a respectable 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Disney+ cancelled Renegade Nell after just one season, reportedly due to budget cuts and internal restructuring. Fans and critics alike expressed disappointment at the decision, especially given the show’s cliffhanger ending and the rich potential for further storytelling.
