‘The Diplomat’ Season 3 Trailer Teases Power Shifts, Political Chaos & A Nightmare Promotion

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has unveiled the first teaser trailer for ‘The Diplomat Season 3, confirming the much-anticipated return of the political thriller this autumn, and by the looks of it, the storm that’s been brewing since the explosive Season 2 finale is about to erupt.

Production has wrapped in both London and New York, and the new footage offers a tense glimpse at what lies ahead for Kate Wyler (Keri Russell). Following the dramatic collapse of the US presidency and the rise of Grace Penn (Allison Janney) to the top job, Kate finds herself being pushed toward a position she never asked for, Vice President of the United States, with her ever-manipulative husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) still pulling strings in the background.

As creator Debora Cahn puts it, “Season 3 flips the chessboard,” teasing a narrative where “Kate lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want.”

Picking up moments after last season’s shock ending, Kate has just accused now-President Grace Penn of orchestrating a terrorist plot, only to watch her ascend to power following the death of President Rayburn. Hal may have inadvertently caused the president’s demise, but that hasn’t stopped his campaign to place Kate in the VP’s chair, whether she wants it or not.

The teaser also gives us a first look at Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn, the new First Gentleman, and husband to Janney’s President Penn. While his casting was previously announced, this marks the first official footage of the two West Wing alumni together in the roles. As Kate steps into the role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, she’s also dealing with an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison and an unnerving bond with Todd…

Returning alongside Russell, Sewell, Janney, and Whitford are David Gyasi as Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, and Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, all of whom have their own agendas as diplomacy teeters on a knife-edge.

Debora Cahn is the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. She returns to Season 3 alongside executive producers Janice Williams, Keri Russell, and Alex Graves. The series has already been renewed for Season 4.

The Diplomat‘ Season 3 premieres on Netflix in Autumn 2025. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
