‘Bloodaxe’, Michael Hirst’s sweeping new Norse historical drama from Prime Video, has found its female lead as Jessica Madsen (Bridgerton) joins the cast as the formidable Gunnhild, wife of the legendary Erik Bloodaxe.
Filming is set to begin later this summer across Ireland and Iceland, with the epic saga produced by MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios.
Created and executive produced by Michael Hirst (Vikings, The Tudors) and his son Horatio Hirst, the series chronicles the rise of one of history’s most infamous Norse raiders, Erik Bloodaxe, played by Xavier Molyneux (Neighbours), and his powerful and politically astute wife Gunnhild, known in the sagas as the “Mother of Kings.” As the couple fights to secure the throne of Norway, they must navigate a brutal world filled with rival factions, crumbling alliances, and violent betrayals.
Set during a time of intense upheaval, ‘Bloodaxe’ promises a clash of Scandinavian rulers and English kings, culminating in a cataclysmic power struggle that could change the course of history.
Jessica Madsen, best known for her fan-favourite role as mean girl Cressida Cowper in Netflix’s Bridgerton, brings star power and steel to the role of Gunnhild, a character poised to be just as cunning and commanding as her husband.
The series is being helmed by an impressive roster of executive producers alongside the Hirsts, including Morgan O’Sullivan (Vikings), Steve Stark (The Handmaid’s Tale) under his Toluca Pictures label, Arturo Interian, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, and Fred Toye (Watchmen).
‘Bloodaxe’ will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
